Montrose, Colorado
United States
Montrose Rec Department
50F / 10C
Sunny
Total Time = 8h 30m
Overall Rank = 92/180
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 12/13
Pre-race routine:

Got up about 05:00--probably a little too early.
Ate breakfast about 05:30. Had coffee, orange juice and cream of wheat with fresh sliced peaches and fat free vanilla yogurt. This was probably a little early too.
Got to the race about 07:00. Racked bikes and set up transition area. Got timing chip and number. Stretched on the pool deck where it was warm.

Event warmup:

Swam a couple of laps, worked on flip turns in case I decided to try them( I didn't), practiced start dives until I could do 3 in a row without losing my goggles. Thought I had it down.
Swim
  • 15m 25s
  • 550 yards
  • 02m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Goggles came down on the start dive. Stopped at the far wall to put them back on.
What would you do differently?:

Wall start until I learn how to start with goggles. Try to temper my urge to sprint so I don't run out of gas.
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

Dried off(it was cold) and put on socks and shoes. Put on helmet, shades and biking gloves and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Even though it was cold I could have dealt with not drying off. The gloves are probably not necessary. I need to practice drying my feet and putting on socks and shoes.
Bike
  • 55m 54s
  • 15.62 kms
  • 16.77 km/hr
Comments:

I passed about 8-10 riders and felt strong and fast. I passed 4 on the big hill alone. The only way to ride faster would be on a road bike. I am using a Trek mountain bike set up with 1" road tires and toe clips. They make a huge difference but a road bike would make a big difference.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more often. Buy a road bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
What would you do differently?:

Not ride with gloves or keep them on during the run.
Run
  • 34m 40s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 56s  min/km
Comments:

I felt ok for the first couple of minutes until I started up the steeps. I really gassed quick. 3 separate times I walked a few steps to catch my breath. After topping the hill I ran the top and all the way down to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

I realized that all the run training I had done was on the flats. Nothing uphill. Half of my running will be Pioneer Park road or Wood Hill.
Post race
Warm down:

After 2 minutes of walking I was fine.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nerves, lack of sleep, lack of hilly run training, not enough swimming.

Event comments:

I'm already planning on going back next year. It was a good one to start with. Very organized and lots of volunteers. I finished a triathlon--I'm pumped!!!!

Thanks! I've done a few more and believe I'm hooked. Got any running advice for me?
