Looking for a place to get some practice in OW. Anyone know of good place in Chesapeake? I was out at VA Beach last week and it looks like the lifeguards don't let you get far enough out of the surf to do any swimming. Any suggestions?

It's a little bit far away from you (but maybe not as far as the VA Beach one), but if you wanted an organized swim, the Colonial Area Triathlon club hosts an OWS every other thursday at 6pm in Williamsburg/Jamestown just off the colonial parkway.

Here's the website if you want to check it out:

What are the swims like? I am just starting out, I've only gone beyond 1000yds a few times in the pool. Right now I'm at about 11:00/500yds, I just want to make sure I can handle an OWS because I'm planning on my first sprint being in OCT.

The swim is at your own pace. It is normaly set up with three bouys so that you swim in a triangle and the water is shallow. It is around waist deep, so if you get tired, just stand up. It is just deep enough for swimming kinda like the pool. The club also has been having someone in a kayak keeping an eye on everyone. The bottom line is you will be fine.

sounds great...if you guys don't mind someone crashing a club swim I'll meet you out there next week. This Thursday is a bust for me, gotta work over night. I checked out the calendar on the CAT web page, is Chris the best one to contact for directions?

Chris is the guy to contact for directions or any other questions you might have! Also, if you are interested, he'll be teaching an OWS clinic at our meeting on August 15th in Newport News, if you'd like to attend that.
