Subject: removing the stem from deeper wheels

I'm sure this topic has been covered but I'll ask anyway.  My new (for me) tri bike has deeper wheels than I'm used to, Real Design I think.  They take the long stem presta valve tubes.  Today I decided I'd better learn to change the tire in case of flat prior to this weekend's upcoming race.  In my practice, I found that it was very difficult to get the stem out of the wheel after having removed one side of the tire from the rim.  I ended up taking the entire tire off and then taking stem out.  Is this the best way to do this?  I'm sure glad of the practice session as it took about 15 mins from start to finish.

The long valves can definitely be harder to remove quickly. You could try using shorter valves with extenders that you can screw off and back on, but that might take as long or longer than just pulling the whole tire.

I personally like the Topeak extenders:

Pull the rest of the tube out first, and then make sure both beads of the tire are over the last part of the tube before you try to pull it out.
