Subject: ???Chainring Question???
I've inherited an old Nishiki with  the Biopace chain rings in 52/42 -- My question?  Can I change these rings out with some fairly inexpensive "round" chain rings?  Or, can I change the 42 to something smaller that's round and still keep the 52 Biopace as the larger gear?...

DO you need a new chainring, or just don't like the biopace?    Either way, as long as you match up the hole spacings on your crank, you are good.   I think  you would be fine replacing one at a time, too.   You might look at a new crankset also.   I see closeout double cranks for under $50 all the time.

Thanks for the quick reply -- Yeah, this 42 is killing me on hills, and I'd like to put maybe a 39 in it's place if that would give much help on the hills (The cassette is something like 11/23 I think, so I don't have much low-end).  Where might I look to see some of the double cranks you're speaking of??

Check the Salsa chainrings at Excel Sports Boulder ( http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Chainring+Sma...

If it's a 130 bolt pattern (as opposed to 110), you can get down to a 38 on there. And it's only $20. No ramps and pins, so it won't shift quite as smooth as a Shimano ring, but I've used them with finicky STIs with no problems.

Thanks for the reply...  Another novice question:  How can I tell if it's a 130 or 110 bolt pattern?

Measure from the center of the crankarm to one bolt, and then double it. In millimeters.

As far as cheaper cranksets, just look at all the major online shops.   Nashbar's got some for under $50 - you may need a new Bottom bracket too, though.     Ebay would be a good place to look as well.  Just make sure you get the same BB type, (probably square taper)

Another (probably cheaper) option might be to swap out the cassette with a wider range.   If you are 11/23 now, going 12/27 would be as good or better than going from 42 to 39 in front.

Thanks for all the help guys - I'm going to go with the Salsa 38 (20 bucks) and see how that works - I may end up changing the cassette if I need more versatility from the gearing -
