A friend of mine was at a press conference with the mayor about an hour ago. She knows I've been training for this race and she called me as soon as the press conference was over.

OMG... it's got to be because of the ship crash and fuel spill yesterday in the bay. That totally sucks.

I wonder if I'm gonna get a refund for the Zip wheels and the wetsuit that I rented...

Here is a link to some news photos. From the pics I saw, it's hard to believe there is no oil in Pirates Cove.

If the race is still on, I'm in. Especially after paying the entry fees.

The website message has changed to a little. They're now saying: At this time Tri-California Events, and agencies involved with Water Safety have not made any final decisions regarding the swim portion of the race. Please check back for regular updates.

So maybe they're planning on going forward with the bike and run?

Although they are still holding out on an official verdict, it seems as if they are prepared to go without the swim if necessary.

An excerpt from the official press release:

Tri-California is in direct contact with the U.S Coast Guard and water safety officials. As of 1:00
pm on November 8, 2007, the US Coast Guard determined that the swimming area off Treasure Island is unsafe
; however, the Coast Guard will re-evaluate water conditions daily.

Tri-California Events does not intend to make any final decisions about the swim portion of the
race until late Friday, or even early Saturday morning, unless officially determined sooner.
Regardless, the event will continue with at least the bike, and run portion.

Full article here: here

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not interested in racing a crit on Saturday. With the amount of turns and number of waves coming onto the course at a given time, it seems as if the bike course could become rather crowded if there isn't a swim.

Decisions....

I agree too, I don't want to crawl out of bed just to race a brick! I would also want a refund if this were the case, or at least have my fees advanced to pay for Wildflower. We should all band together and make a fuss!

+1

I already applied my TriCal credit from this year's Wildflower tri (canceled due to injury) to the Treasure Island Tri. I'm going to be really upset if I lose that credit.

Can you legitimately ask for a refund if they only do a duathlon instead of a tri?

I can't imagine for 1 moment that the swim "is on" for this weekend's race (which I'm signed up for).

Look where the spill occurred, and where Treasure Island is.

The spill has already spread out miles to the south, east, and north.  Cove or no cove, Treasure Island is toxic toast this weekend and into the near future.

While its not the RD's fault, they would best be served by offering at least "credits" towards those disinclined to race a duathlon this weekend...and even better...to offer "refunds" completely.

Some more pics for ya:

Ok, the swim is officially off. I am bummed and I want my money back:

Due to the recent 58,000-gallon oil spill into the San Francisco Bay, Tri-California Events, the United States Coast Guard, and city officials have determined that the water conditions off Treasure Island make it unsafe to proceed with the swim leg of the San Francisco Triathlon.

I am looking into the refund policy right now...

Looks like it's a Dual for both the Olympic and Sprint.

It says nothing about refunds if something happens to the race :

I know, I just emailed the race info emaill address asking if they had some kind of statement to make concerning refunds for this event. I was afraid to email the cancellation email, because I guess I'll do the bike/run if they aren't going to give us a refund. Although I am a little frightened by the thought of starting a bike race with ~40 girls at the same time! I didn't sign up for a bike roller derby!!!

I just returned from the race expo where I informed the folks at the registration table of my intent to withdraw. They offered a 50% credit toward another Tri-Cal event and I put my name and age group on a list.

When I asked if it was okay to share this info with others, all they said was make sure you tell people that you MUST show up at the registration table and put your name on the list in order to receive any credit.

Good luck and happy racing.

They said they would give me 25% towards another race even though I competed today. They didn't mention anything about signing up anywhere. Does that mean I'm not getting the 25%??

I got disqualified. I got confused and only did 2 loops of the run instead of 4. I got mixed up with the swim. That's why I hate races with loops... Oh well... It was fun anyway. I did close to 20 mph on the bike course that was very technical so that was very good for me.
