Ok - if I am ever going to dump the socks I am going to need some input from folks about shoes that are better for running in barefoot. I have seen Pearl Izumi's SyncroFloat2 with a seamless upper but I have never worn these and generally do not buy shoes (or other products) from a company who does not have that as a core business.

What else can I do in addition to getting shoes with smooth insides?

Thanks in advance

You can use super glue or duct tape over "hot spots" to avoid blisters, but if you just start easy (short), and progress, you will gt calusses (or however the plural of that is spelled) in the appropriate places, and it'll no longer be a problem.

I've heard of people carrying socks on a run and putting them on at ever-increasing distances along their routes. That's a good way to progress going sockless without having to decrease mileage in doing so.

That's a damn good idea...

The Saucony Type A is a good shoe to run in sockless. I just bought some Newtons, but I haven't run in them yet.

I run sockless in Asics gels without issues, but I went in stages...

1) I went to good quality store and tried on dozens of shoes without socks. Found a good comfy pair.
2) Ran in Smartwool ultra thin socks for a while to break in the shoes.
3) Went sockless for a couple of miles at a time. Had a couple of hot spots, but no blisters and then they built up into callouses.
4) I've been training and racing (sprint & Oly) without socks all season. (In my HIM, I put on socks in T1.)

I used to get a blister on the right instep of my Brooks Radius shoes during short runs.

Fast forward, I recently purchased some Brooks Glycerin's and wore them sockless for a short run (2-3 miles) within the first week and had no problems whatsoever.  And as comfortable as they feel, I imagine this'd be the same for longer runs too (though anything beyond 10K I'd wear socks regardless).

My last two pair of Asics have been friendly to my feet. No blisters while going sockless with either the Gel Landreth, or the DS Trainers.

I got a new pair of Mizunoa Wave Riders, though, and my first sockless runs were not quite so pleasant. One seam in particular got to me.

YMMV.
