I'm in the camp of "regular old sit-ups are crap". There are plenty of core-strengthening exercises that will work your muscles a lot better, and there are exercises that will work different sections of your core - obliques, lower abs, etc. Lots of articles on this website and I'm sure there are others who can give you specifics. I tend to stick to a lot of pilates-based exercises that I learned from years and years of dancing, that are super-effective, but some are hard to describe! This doesn't mean that I never do sit-ups, but they're usually one of many different things I do.

In my dreams I do 10 sets of 50 every day, as proper as possible.  In reality, 3 sets of 25 every few days (the distance between the few days varies) and not entirely proper when pushing the last 5.

more of a crunch then a "sit-up", but 3 sets of 50 4 days a week. Mixed in with various core exercises

I do the following 3-4 times a week:

20-25 crunches on inlcine bench at full tilt

20-25 for obliques (each side) either using the straps on a pull up bar and lifting legs up to the side or using the hyperextension rack (but on my side)

5-10 reps using some weighted ab machine or ab bench

sometimes I switch things up and use differnt ab machines or throw in crunches on  a swiss ball or something like that.

Note that I'm sure to balance the ab work by doing back exercises (important to keep everything in balance

Once Every morning at 5 a.m. when my alarm goes off and I have to go and do some real exercise.

I think sit ups do more harm than good - sez the guy with the mushy belly.

I agree, sit ups are crap. I do hanging leg raises, ab wheel rollouts, and a new addition to my routine, reverse hyperextensions to strengthen my lower back.

I really don't do anything but have notice stronger abs since starting to swim.  I guess it is the rolling and engaging the abs that is happening.

I do sets of crunches and situp inbetween exercises in my strength workouts, which I do 3x per week. With around 30 in a set, always keeping proper form.

I'm not trying to dispute it, but could someone explain why situps are bad? I thought they were only bad for you if you put your hands behind your head, and pulled on your neck, or did them with straight legs, at it hurts you rback??
