Subject: Body fat %, how overweight am I?
I'm not utterly concerned with my image or worried, but i want to know what my BF% is.

My scale has been telling me between 26-29%.
So if I'm about 205 lbs, that would mean at 29%, I am carrying almost 60lbs of fat? How is this possible, I have a little bit of a belly, only about 1.5 inches if i squeeze right in the middle, i have no fat on my arms - 1/4", and 1/3" on my quads. I was always bony and weighed more than my friends growing up.

My question i guess, is, and give it to me straight! Do i really have 60lbs of fat on my body? If i do, where is it?
Is there another cheap or free way to measure my BF% to gauge my fitness progress?

MimiR told me:
body fat measured by biolelectrical impedance (your target scale) will be dependent on your hydration level...as will your weight, for that matter...the big gain/loss is a function of hydration.

That would still mean I'm approximately 27%, +/-1%

Please help, thanks!

Is this just a regular bathroom scale that gives a BF%? I don't have much experience with those, but I tend to doubt their accuracy.

As far as having 60 lbs of fat, it is possible. Fat can surround your organs and also be intramuscular, so it might not necessarily show up as rolls on the surface.

I don't know that the exact percentage as important as seeing the percentage go in the right direction, if you are trying to get in better shape. I would just use you scale as a ballpark to tell you if you are headed in the right direction. And be sure to step on it at approximately the same time every day, with about the same hydration level.

I wouldn't trust a scale to tell you, BUT it is possible to have that much fat. You do have some fat everywhere whether you actually see it or not. As kaitlinrose said, fat surrounds your organs, and you have fat in your legs, your belly, your butt, and yes, even in your arms. If you really want to know how much fat you have, go have it done somewhere, don't trust the scale. Do you know your approximate BMI (there are calculators online that get close)? That can tell you a lot about whether you are overweight or not. If you weigh 205, I'd guess you are pretty tall?

If you are using a Tanita scale assuming you take your BF in the afternoon/evening and have stayed fairly well hydrated during the day, the it is pretty accurate.  I'm not familiar with other brands, so I can't comment on them.

I take my BF and weight in the morning, usual after my run, so I'm slightly dehydrated, which gives you a higher # (the scale is impedence based and measures by the resistance of water in your body, so if you are dehydrated you will get higher reading).

I have seen a variation of 1 - 3% by taking it in the morning after waking up/running/riding and then taking it in the evening when I get home from work.  May not sound like much, but that is over a 10% difference between morning and evening in my measurements (7.5% BF in the morning to 6% BF in the evening).

To see where you fall, just google body fat ranges to get a sense of where you "stand" in the overall picture.

Edit:  The Tanita scales have been independently shown to be consistent with BMI and submersion tests +/- a few %, so don't knock 'em too much .....

I had a similar experience when I got a scale that shows bf%.  It said I was at 19 to 20%.  Thinking this couldn't be right, I had my bf% done at the gym where I work out.  They told me it was 20.5%.  So my scale was pretty close.  I have since lost 14lbs and my scale says my bf% is around 15 to 16%.  My scale also shows water %, and the water % does seem to go up a little as my bf% drops to a new level, however it seems to eventually settle back down to where it was and my bf% stays at the new level.

My guess is that your scale is probably fairly close.  Sorry.

this chart is from a body fat calculator that I use on the internet sometimes.  If this chart is accurate and you are below 30, I think the percentage is off.

My bathroom scale says 16%.. i was just measured by a nurse at 8%, which is way more accurate to what I look like. I wouldnt put a lot of faith in the bathroom scale.

I use the Tania BC534 scale and it's accurate (terribly accurate). My doctor doubted the accuracy of my scale so he checked and nope it's accurate. I find the body fat is fairly inaccurate when I'm dehydrated but if I check at a normal hydration status then it's dead on.

Is the Tanita accurate perhaps but some other brands are not. At least not for "athletic" body types. While I was following a weight lifting lifestyle most folks considered the BF scales too inaccurate to use.

I have one and it will say I'm 40%-50% body fat however calipers will consitently show I'm just under 25% BF. GNC sells a caliper also available at http://www.accumeasurefitness.com/and it is pretty consistant in it's readings. It recommends a single pinch reading which of course is suspect but a quick google will give you instructions to do a 7 or 10 site (pinch) test. I think these multi site tests are generally considered to be +- 6% to 10%... either way more accurate than a BF scale. Google is your friend.

I went to the UT Kinesiology Dept here in Austin to get my body composition done using a DEXA. A DEXA uses xrays to calculate your bone mass, body fat and muscle and then shows you how much of each for each section of your body - torso, legs, arms, etc. I immediately went out and bought a Tanita so I would be able to have a baseline from which to work from. The Tanita measured me -1% of the DEXA. So it is surprisingly accurate.

The only iffy part of my Tanita comparison is I carry more body fat % in my legs than my upper body (pear), so with impedence focused on the lower half it may be a bit skewed. Regardless, it is a nice way to gauge body comp changes at home.

Now to your % question. The chart given me by the Kinesiology dept said men 20-39 are considered "normal desirable %" 8-19% and "overweight" at 20-24%, obese at >25%.

So by that chart it would put you at obese, which sounds highly unlikely given the info you gave above. Your best bet would be a caliper method of body fat measurement or a submersion.

Like others said there are several things that factor into what your BF% is using one of the impedence scales, wether handheld or bathroom scale.  Dehydration, last meal time, last training session, time of day, etc.  I personally use a omron handheld unit and it is at least consistant.  One of it's requirements is that you set it up in athlete mode or normal mode based on your amount/intensity of activity.  I have mine set in athlete mode (normal is a few % higher), I am 6'7" 205 and am around 13% (26.65lbs of fat).  If you are 205 26% (53lbs of fat) is definately possible.  I have extremely skinny legs and arms so I am pretty sure I have little or no fat on either of those body parts.  So depending on your build it is possible, fat hides all over the place and it definately would not take much to add 20lbs over what I have.

One suggestion would be to go to a gym and have them test your BF% using the calipers and compare to what your scale says.  If they calculate 20% figure your scale is 6% high.

OK, i did the BMI on the CDC website:

http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/adult_BMI/english_bmi_calculato...

I put in 6'0" and 205lbs, it said that I am like pretty well overweight? It's saying i'm going to die of heart disease and cholesterol!

Can some other people use this thing and tell me if it's right? I remember on the weight charts in middle school, when I was bony skinny and like 5'10" the charts said I was significantly overweight. The nurses said it was wrong. Where are the nurses now

I might just be trying to rationalize this whole thing, but I don't think I can really be that high!

The scale is pretty similar to this one:
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-1/qid=1186084812/ref=sr_1...
Same brand, this is probably just the updated style that target is carrying.

Either way, I'll be getting skinnier. I have never felt bad about my weight before, this is going to motivate me.

BMI is a waste as far as I am concerned... for example, my BF is 10% which is borderline lean, but my BMI (5'9, 162) is 23.9, which is on the high side of the normal category.  If I were to gain 7 pounds of muscle, I would then be in the overweight category.

I wouldn't waste your time with BMI.

BMI is not exactly the best measurement when applied to the individual.  Keep in mind, it is an average number, and is used as a tool in helping to determine if someone is chronic over-/underweight.

Muscle weighs more than fat, so a muscular person will weigh more than another person of the same size.  Keeping that in mind, it's kind of hard to justify being overweight if you're an active person going by just BMI.

I just did it. It says I'm obese @ 31.3. The insurance companies use a similar formula. To get life insurance I have to go to a doctor and the doctor has to put into the report something that says I'm not obese just have higher than normal musclature. You CANNOT Base anything on those charts. Get a set of calipers and if possible do a submersion then you can see how accurate the calipers are and use them weekly monthly or daily... whatever floats your boat.

The link you gave for the CDC gave me the same BF% reading as my scale did this morning. 25% for me = more work to do.

I wouldn't waste your time with BMI.

Ditto, I bet there are plenty of professional athletes who are 6', 205.

My advice: Eat right, train right, sleep right, kiss your loved-ones goodnight, and throw the scale out the window.

Hey newb2tri!

I followed your link in entered your data and then entered mine.....I know that for me, the results is off by at least 13%. The calculator you provided showed that I was at 30% plus. The calculator you provided shows me Obese.

Where I don't deny that I need to work on my body fat %, I am not obese. I do hydrostatic weight tests which is one of the more accurate ways to measure BF%. Based upon my June 2007 testing, I was carrying 34lbs of fat or 17.1% fat. I do carry 164.5lbs of lean body mass at 5'8". As of end of July, I'm closer to 15.5%. The difference between 30(plus)% and 17.1% = 13% and change!

Your local colleges may have a hydrostatic weight testing service in the "Wellness Centers".

Hope this helps!

If you don't have high cholesterol then you aren't going to die from that. The same goes for heart disease. Those medical websites are all designed for the greatest CYA that is possible. That page is just written in simple medico-legalese. The only way to know that is get the blood work. My cholesterol levels are absolutely fine although my fathers cardiologist kept saying that he doubted it. It was a funny conversation which showed that he believed what he believed and none of those "darn scientific tests" would get in the way of that. The bottom line that is the medical community is full of opinions and they are all contradicted by someone else. If you are healthy then you are healthy. Get a physical (not a 15 minute drive-by) and some bloodwork to be 100% sure if you are really concerned. Even if it comes back less than optimal training will eventually fix that except in the cases of genetic issues but you need to address those medically. This is the fun medical term idiopathic which means "I don't know why".

BMI is a vague guide and not too valuable for anyone that isn't exactly shaped as the textbook indicates they should be. It's good for really skinny people without muscle but for those with muscle just toss it out.

I wouldn't sweat it just keep doing what you've been doing and everything will be fine.

Just to illustrate the difference. At 5'7" and 200lbs I come in at 31.3 (if I recall correctly) on the BMI scale. I just did the Calipers thing and it shows 22.8%... Chunky sure. Obese no. I have about 25lbs to lose. So 45.6lbs of fat and 154.4lbs Lean body mass. go back and plug into the BMI calculator 154.4lbs at 5'7" and I'll bet it's middle to high side of normal... Point is to be normal on the BMI I'd have to have 0% BF.

FYI, BMI is not BF%.  They are two different things.  I am 6'7" 205lbs 13% BF but my BMI is around 24 (no percentage, just a number).  According to BMI scales I am low obese.  BMI is crap, it says I should weigh like 180 which would be disguisting too look at.  To answer the OP's question, if you are infact 26% BF (not BMI) then that is definately high for a guy (depending on your age and you look pretty young.  Make sure your scale is not showing BMI, in that case your BF% is probably lower.  You really can't go by my height compared to yours since we are both 205, you might have alot more muscle mass and thus be at 10% BF.  Does your scale have the medal bands on it and you stand on it barefooot?  If not that is one way to tell for sure you are seeing BMI.  I don't think that it is even possible for a website to know your BF%.

I think first of all, that BMI has to be garbage, because if you are 6'0" 250lbs running back and 10% body fat, which i think would be common, there is no friggin way that is obese, but that chart says it's 30.0+ (off the charts)

The fact that a lot of you who are very fit got high BMI ratings and there is so much inconsistency in the BF scales reassures me.

I'm not going to let it reassure me, however that I'm in the best shape possible. Aesthetically, there can be some improvements, get that six pack back etc. Otherwise, I just want to feel fit and healthy 24/7/365, and prove it by completing my first triathlon at Mission Bay, along with a bunch of other BT'ers, shout out to all the first timers there with me

Either way, I know what 30ish% looks like from group BF% tests in sports and fitness classes, and there is no way I have that much. A coworker also just told me that a gallon of fat only weighs like 5-6lbs, and another told me that I have max 5 lbs of fat -on- my stomach. Who knows what is inside.

The only conclusive data my coworkers calculated is that my head is mostly devoid and cavernous

Sorry to tell you, but you are a little overweight. I am 6'0, 38 yrs old and before I started training, was at 215. I am now around 180 have have a BF% hovering between of 14-16% and a BMI of 24.8 so I am at the very high edge of being normal. I need to still lose 5-10 lbs.

Depending on how old you are, you may be fine. As you get older, you are going to want to slim down as it is much harder to lose the weight as you age. Keep training, eating right and you should be fine.

well according to my tantia scale my lifting is paying off. I have not really lost more than 2 lbs but my bf% at night is from 31% to 27%. Interesing though that my body fat % never changes in the morning but can alter int he evening based on my hydration.
