Alcatraz Challenge Swimmer Dies 8-5-07

A 51 year old female swimmer from Houston Texas died during Sundays Alcatraz Challenge Swim. The swim is 1.5 miles and has a 7 mile run after the swim. The swim has been held for 27 years and this is the first death. She was found in a area that had calmer water then the start. The San Francisco bay was reported to be very rough during the swim. Water temps were reported high 50's. Over 500 swimmers took part in the event. No cause has been determined as yet. My sympathies go out to her family and friends on what should have been a happy time as this and all the Alcatraz swims sound like very fun swim events.
