Subject: Training around a 10-day work week
I'm looking for tips on training throughout a 10-day work week. The four-day weekend is nice, but the long work week is killing me. Training seems to go well through the first 5 days or so, but then I get very tired and run down. Motivation takes a nose dive and morning workouts...well they're hit and miss at best. Then afternoons get filled with errands and must-do's that would normally occur during the weekend. I can't go 2 weeks without putting gas in the car, washing clothes, buying fresh fruit/vegetables, etc. Once the weekend comes, I get to sleep in, recover, and have plenty of time for long workouts. But I'm only doing 2 long workouts per month (on average) rather than the usual 4.

Changing my work schedule is not an option. So now I'm trying to figure out the best way to optimize training. Any ideas?

Thanks.

If you come up with any ideas - let me know! Although I only work 4 days on/4 days off, my days on are 12 hour shifts .. so I generally get no quality workouts in during my working days due to my work-related fatigue and time constraints. My first day off is generally spent catching up on sleep and housework .. so .. yup I feel your pain!!!!!

I know your pain!  I work a on 2off schedule so mine is a little easier to work with.  I can get my runs in at work as well so that makes my schedule almost fall into place by itself.

Since I dont plan on doing any Tris this year I havent started swim training yet (ear tubes still installed as well) this has allowed me to figure out a schedule with just the bike and the run to start with, less schedule hassle, faster prep time etc.  really makes fitting it all in somewhat doable!

Good luck!

I struggle with scheduling also . I work 12 hour shifts - 4 on/5 off.  I can't swim on work days and it's tough to fit  3 swims and long runs and bikes into my off days, especially if they fall over the weekend when I have other family obligations.  I just do what I can, when I can.

I'm sure a coach would be able to help with scheduling training around complicated work schedules.  That's not an option I'm ready to factor into my budget yet.

I least I'm not the only one suffering through a difficult work schedule. I slept through this morning's bike workout so I could get 3 hours sleep instead of just 2 hours. This afternoon I'll get to enjoy a 1 hour bike workout in 100 degree heat. This seemed like a good idea at 5:00 am

Make your training fit your life.

Most folks take rest days Monday...when I work, I get more and more tired as the week goes on so rest days were Thursday and sometimes both Monday and Thursday.

Sounds like first day of your weekend may need to be rest day or a light workout day...maybe one workout maybe a swim. In the 10 day window sounds like day 6 you need  a rest day. I'd suggest figuring out which 2-3 days out of 14 you need as rest and then work backwards from there to put your training together.

Here is my ideas:

Can you do longer stuff on 2nd and 4th day of your weekend say bikes since they take longer, and on 3rd do a long run. If you went that way I'd do a brick on the 2nd but not on teh 4th since you just did a long run on the third. Then Maybe on day 5 or 7 (7 would be after the day 6 rest if you went that way) of work week do another long run. It depends what distance you are training for but a long run during the week lots of folks do. That is my thinking just of the top of my head...that way in a 2 week block you'd get 2 long runs and 2 long bikes in. Add a second brick just a short 15' run after a bike you do during your work week.
