Subject: IM Florida Registration Question
I know it's a little early to ask this question, but do you think it's better to sign up in person the day after the event or do it online? After following the LPIM regis., it seems like it would be better to be there in person. This would be my 1st IM and if I do decide to do it, I would like to get in. I do have some vacation time left and I could volunteer and watch in person. Never have been to an IM event. Only on TV. Plus mom lives in Florida, always a good place to eat. Any help with this would be great. George

Hey George,

It's funny you posted this today because I was going to post just about the same question later tonight when I got home. I want to do IM FL next year and would love to hear some advice on the online registration. If that is to much work then I'm ready to drive down there from Charlotte and volunteer so I could be in line the following morning.

Kevin, the way some of these IM races sell out, it really seems like a good idea. A friend who did the race last year told me it's good to go and watch. Also you could swim, bike and run some of the course. Good motivation. I'll need it. lol

So I hear. I got into IM CDA without any problem but it looks like I'll be a volunteer at IM FL this year. 3 vacations this year and they all involve a HIM, IM and now volunteering. Wow, I'm so much fun!

I'm signed up for Florida 2007 last year. I live on the west coast and started signing in the during the first few seconds of the online registration process. I figured it would sell out in a few hours. I heard rumor that it sold out in 40 minutes...others say just shy of an hour. The site was somewhat slow and it took me 30 minutes to get signed up. I was a nervous wreck while signing up concerned I wouldn't get signed up in time! Anyhow, I think if you could be on site that might be better but since I have never seen the "in-person" sign up process all i can tell you is the web process doesn't stay open for very long. People who were in the middle of registering online were told the event was full during their registration process the first hour!

Good luck!

I was at IMLP sign-up this year and based on that (waiting in line with 1700 other people) If you want to make sure you will get in be there. Not only be there but if sign-up is at 10, be there at 7.

There were people in sleeping bags at IMLP sign-up.

Good Luck

I've never registered for an IM but I have read a lot about it.  IMLP 2008 sold out in under 15 minutes online, there were only about 800 spots available. I'd love to be able to attend/volunteer for an IM, this would probably be your best bet to ensure you get in.

If you stand in line on site, what forms of payment do they take(require)?  Credit/debit card, personal check, cash, money order?

IMLP you just showed ID and filled out a piece of paper they called a voucher. They kept half and you got the other half with a code and instructions. Then about 2 weeks later you do the real registration and pay on-line thru Active.com They match your code with your name to verify it was you that registered in person. That is what all us line waiters did yesterday on Active and had a few issues.

I signed up for IMFL last year on site, I got there about an hour early and was about 120th in line, when I got to the front they just ask for ID and your address, age, etc. no payment is made until about 3 weeks later then you have a 2 week window to sign up and pay online. When I was there last year they were letting you sign two people, yourself and someone else, so if you know of anybody that is going that might be another option. It was worth it for me to watch the event it is so awsome to see everyone finish and to see how the event is run.

Rumor has it that they are no longer going to allow people to sign up anyone other than themself.  If this happens, it seems that the "in person" sign ups will be reduced and allow for more "online" signups.  However, I am not going to chance it and will be at IMFL to volunteer for the race and then will be there the next morning to sign up in person.

If you have a chance to go to the race and volunteer/spectate, I would def do it!! I volunteered/spectated at IMLP this year and had a BLAST! Not only is it good IM karma, but you learn a lot about the race you are going to be doing a year from then.

Thanks everyone for the info. Looks like I am taking a trip to Fl. in nov. I also like the idea of volunteering. I vol. for Eagleman this year, and had a blast. I was at the finish line and got to see all the pros come in and top age gr. I think everybody should volunteer if they get the chance. It's good to give back to the sport we all love.

I'm planning on going down and volunteering too and registering the next day for 2008. Wondering what I want to do as a volunteer. They have you pick your top 3 choices for volunteering.

I suppose I will head down there and volunteer too. Any suggestions on where to stay? I would imagine at this point in the game most places are booked up.

If you go to the website, there is a list of hotels. If you are not sure, just post a question as to where to stay. I am sure someone will help. IM florida website.

Chris, when I volunteered at Eagleman, I was at the swim start and the finish line. I thought the finish line was more fun. The start was pretty cool too, some people are nervous , some relaxed, some chatty. I actually thought the women were more relaxed than the men. I got to meet alot of nice people. I would image the finish line of an IM would be awsome. All that emotion. Just watching the finish of the Hawaiian IM was emotional enough for me. Following the Blazeman story, I'm sitting in my Archie Bunker chair balling my eyes out like a big baby. My wife lookin at me like I'm nuts. Sorry I'm rambling. Anyway my 2 cents

I'll be heading down with my 11 year old son. Was going to volunteer, but won't get there til Sat afternoon after an 18 hour drive. We're treating it as a father-son road trip, so it should be fun. Will hopefully be in line at 7:00 AM, but will probably end up sleeping through the alarm. My wife thinks we're nuts to do this, and that I should take my chance online. After the whole LP thing I think it'll be worth the time to do it this way.

Okay, I have a question.  If you're in line Sunday morning, are you guaranteed a spot?  I mean, what if the web folks take up the slots while you're waiting in line?

Karl,

My understanding is that they handout the slips to the persons in line an hour before the online registration starts.  so yeah, you are pretty much guaranteed a spot.

Last year they opened up early and started to register people early, they said everyone in line was guaranteed a spot. I believe everyone in line was done before the online registration started.

I guess that means I'll be making the trip.  Looks like a butt-load of BT'rs are doing the race in '08.  Should be a blast.
