Subject: I'm very new!
Ok, well about 4 months ago I registered on this website and I started out my introduction pretty much the same way I am doing today.... I am pretty athletic and I like to think I am in pretty good shape- I run about 5 or 6 miles 5 times a week but that is it. I don't really swim that often and I don't ever ride bikes. I recently moved to Hawaii and there is a triathlon on the 18th of April that I really want to participate in. I'm not good at all the names and stuff, but I don't think it is a full triathlon, it is a 6 mile run, 1 mile swim, and like 25 mile bike ride...I think. Well anyways I am hoping that anyone who has any advice for me can let me know what I should be doing and if it is even realistic for me to think I can be ready, I personally think I can do it, but I am not really sure where to begin. Thank you very much!!

Hey Brooke, Welcome aboard, I'm new to all this too! And I have to say I'm insanely that you live in Hawaii (I just woke up to 6" of snow just east of D.C. !!) There's a cool website called DAHULAMAN.COM that has some information you might find helpful. Good luck and train hard! Kathy

Hi Brooke--

I and some friends of mine just recently returned from the Honolulu marathon (what a trip) and we were so excited about the triathlon that you are going to do! It will be great to get in on the first year... you know, I was there when...

There are tons of good books on triathlons and training schedules out there (if the ones on this site don't work for you) and you can check them out here. I'm pretty sure they did a thread on them in the forums.

The best advice I can give to you is to stay hydrated! The temp and humidity out there nearly killed me during the marathon!

Welcome,
Dana

Yup - you can do it. The great thing is that you can jump on the bike and begin swim right away. Here is IA we are diggin out of a snow storm. I'm on my bike on a trainer in the family room looking out the window at snow and ice

Hi Brooke, welcome. I also live in Hawaii and training for the Honolulu tri. It is an Olympic distance, 1500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run. Maybe you want to join the Bikefactory triathlon also on the island (Kailua-Oahu). This is a sprint tri: 500m 20k 5k.Where are you training? No snow for us, traing hard.  Bert

Hey Bert I was wondering when is the sprint distance tri? I think that would be a good one for me to do also! Thank so much for letting me know. I live in Laie so i train around here. Either outside or at the gym. Hey do you swim in the ocean or in a pool, I'm not sure if that sounds like a dumb question or not, but I was just wondering? Ok well thanks again! Brooke.

Hey Brooke, the sprint distance is in Kailua, March 21. Almost two months to train. With your running experience probably no problem. I train in a pool (Oahu Club, Hawaii Kai) in a masters swim programm. Every other week I swim in open water. For the Honolulu tri the swimming part is on Saucy Beach, next to the Aquarium at Waikiki. When you feel comfortable in the pool, you gotta go there. Have fun training.  Bert

Brooke, if you swim, bike, and run it's a FULL triathlon. The only way it would not be a full triathlon is if you only did two of the three. I personally focus on Olympic distance and get rather irritated by people who think only an ironman distance is a FULL triathlon. If someone told you what you are doing is not a full triathlon set them straight immediately and don't hesitate to be harsh. I wouldn't.
