Outside magazine this month has an atricle about the Navy Seals. Apparently they are finding the type-A, linebacker sized guys are not what they are really looking for. They are now turning their interests towards endurance athletes, and in particular triathletes.

BTW the title of the article is the subject of this message.

While the article in not online yet it usually is in a few weeks after the issues hits the stands..

It's a bit of a myth tha Spec Ops types are big... the training has always required incredible feats of endurance and bigger guys aren't necessarily best for that.  I hung out with Speical Ops folks at Hurlburt Field in Florida and the only one who was bigger than me was a 6'5 water polo player with a 34" waist.  For the most part they're already pretty lean dudes... so for all you BTers who wanted to get in that line of work, get going, they can always use a few more.

Sounds like a Biathlon Triathlon. I think that's a great idea for a whole new sport.

Average size of the Rangers is about 5'8"-9", and around 155-165 lbs.

Are the aid stations stocked with plastic explosives and ammunition?

I am in no way comparing this to SF, but at 6'3" I had a tough time making it through Rescue Swimmer School. It turns out that pull ups are harder for people with long arms. Who knew???

...and yet swimming should be much easier. Ah, the irony.

Have you ever seen any real Navy S.E.A.L.S ? Most are slim. (young normal looking in good shape people)They have to be to do the PE and endurance tests and mind games they do. They looked like runners/swimmers more so then weight lifters. I saw some of them up in Va Beach Va. a few years back. The "Rambo" pumped up look is Hollywood BS , though I will say one guy with what looked like a radio on his back was a bit bigger then the rest. They were getting on a special boat about 25 feet long next to the aquarium there at a public boat ramp for training. They all hustled around jogging not walking as they got the boat in and ready no loafing , just hustling around. I asked if they were Navy Seals and their leader said yes they were . I could not belive they had to use the public boat ramp but they said their base was just down the road in Sandbridge and they launched these boats there at the public ramp. Looking at some of their tests on the net I see they have to swim 50 yards under water with fins on one breath at the finish of their training. (I can do 35 yards at 50+ with fins..close but not anywhere up to their speed in any other way LOL) . Their paratroop training is the last thing they do in their training.

In any event what you see physically of them is only 1/3 their toughness, the other 2/3's is their mental state, can do, will do, will not fail, no excuses and never leave a partner behind ..thats the Navy SEALS and US military . and thats the way a lot of triathletes are too.

Thats what I'm talking about! I'd love to have to carry my weapon and then try to qualify at the end of the race. Trying to shoot after racing would be awesome!

I was agreeing with you 100% until you got to the last line and a bit, mate lol trust me on this one - being lean n mean to that level is not just a trait of the US Navy Seals but something all Spec Ops groups around the world share. They are truly the top 0.001%

I've an "aquaintance" who now works security out in "somewhere with deserts and sand" but used to be in the 22nd and we got chatting one day about fitness etc. turns out he's never been in a gym in his life but ran, ran, ran and ran with some swimming and climbing thrown in with bodyweight exercises and he has got to be one of the leanest, meanest MF i've ever met even though he's late 40's or so!

Those guys really are amazing. no BS just serious drive to get it done.

Glad the good ones are on our side

Watch the Discovery Channel series called "BUDS: Class 234" sometime. They replay it periodically back to back (5 to 6 eposides I think). I don't mean to burst your bubbles, but those guys were all ripped muscle and between 5'10 and 6'2. The were very muscular, not linebacker big, but certainly more than 155 to 160 lbs. One guy looked like the fullback for Navy (5'10 -- 190), and he was one of the stars fo the class and the series, but he was the most linebacker by far. For a football analogy...they look like college wide receivers lean muscle, no waist, extremely strong, guys who can run and swim fast and forever. Endurance athletes, I totally believe it. However, I didn't see one guy on the series that looked anything like the winner at KONA.

BUDS includes the "hell week" portion of seal training. Something like 70% are "DOR" which translates to "dropped on request" meaning they quit. The quitters are all tougher than nails, so that gives you an idea of who these guys are. During hell week they are exposed to extreme cold (in the icy cold San Diego waters without wetsuits at night), they engage in all sorts of horrific physical training, and sleep is at a minimum. Once they finish that week, BUDS continues with crazy swimming testing in "Pool Week." They essentially drown the guys, and expect them to do blind gear repairs, etc.

No offense to you cross-country runner types out there, but I didn't see any of those body types out there. Maybe the triathlete/runner type is the new trend, but that wasn't reflected in the 2000 television series.

Maybe the triathlete is the new age messenger?  A pony express or messenger pigeon to get word out for reinforments perhaps.
