So, The A & C needs a new thread so here goes....

We bigger folk tend to focus on what's harder for us, hills, hills, joint pain, hills, wind, and hills....

So what do you think you are GOOD at? Don't be shy!

For me, my swim is my strong point of the three. Maybe the fact that water takes a lot of the weight issue away or that by being horizontal, we tend to have a similar cross section to the water as a smaller person, unlike running or biking where my 6'8", 230 frame feels like a sail when the wind picks up. (or the extra BF helps me float!)

I yeah, I'm also very good at getting things off the top shelf at the store!

I'm good at transitions. I don't know why. I've never practiced transitions, but I'm always in and out. Transitions are the only thing where I can place pretty high in my AG or Athena, other than that I'm alway BOP.

it's the swim for me also, I don't put nearly the amount of time swimming as I should,  nor am i that fast but..........getting hit and bumbed doesn't really bother me, I'm usually the one doing most of the hitting, I'd rather be the hammer than the nail type thing.

I grew up around or on water so I'm not nervous about it and I seem to be able to site pretty well so I'm not all over the place...

My strong point?  My determination.  I do not give up.

In reality, I'm slow on all levels.  I have improved dramatically in all areas, but I'm still slow.  But I am one stubborn Donkey. (just read about my swim at SOR)

Oh, and if you want to know which of the sports is my best, right now it's the swim.  It's also the one I've improved the most/worked the most at.  I went from begin afraid to put my face in the water and swimming 5min/100yds,  to consistent bilateral breathing with 2-2:30 min/100yd.

I'm also pretty good in the water. I hate swimming laps, but I love OWS. On the bike, I'm a beast at downhills! Gravity is my friend at least on one side of the hill. Running... well, at least I'm steady.

18 months ago, when I decided to started to do tris again, I would have said my best leg would have been biking. Now, a run time of 10:15 pisses me off, yet my first run of a 1.5 miles 18 months ago took me 25 minutes. A swim time less than 2:00 per 100 is frustrating, yet I started out barely making it down the 50 meter pool the first time I started swimming. My total transitions are hovering at 4 minutes total which is my goal for a race. So I think my strong point is my commmittment to get better in the disciplines that I struggled with at the beginning.

Over the winter, I'll need to figure out what I want/need to concentrate on for 2008.

I would say I am pretty equal in all three.  In my past couple of races I % finish for each discipline was pretty much the same (swim was actually a little lower).  Which pushed me into the top 1/3 overall.  I really enjoyal all three disciplines for different reasons.

Swim - Hardest for me to get good at.  I actually failed beginning Red Cross swimming the first time as a kid.

Bike - Picked up pretty quick and even though I ride an inexpensive tank it was cheap so I like pasing people on the Cervelos, etc.

Run - I was a runner first.  I like the simplicity and realative cheapness of the sport.  Yes, you can spend alot on gadgets and moisture wicking clothing, but all you really need is a cheap pair of shoes.  No pool needed, expensive bike or long loop to ride on.  You can pretty much start at your front door.

We are suppose to have a strong point? I knew I was missing out on something!

Oh alright, if I had to pick one now, I would say it was on a bike... going down a hill... then I am really fast!

I would have to say my strength is the bike.  My RR makes that clear.  I was 97/145 on the swim, 74/145 on the bike and a robust 142/145 on the run.  I can ride like the wind and I run like a cinderblock.

Hey, you're out there - that is better than most - so I would say your dedication and drive is something your good at....

How is training in Chicago? I was there to visit a couple months ago and I thought there were some great opportunities to run and bike along the lake - could get a little crowded though, probably not the best place to be doing 17mph on a bike...

its ok. I just did my 27.32 mile training run in saturday.

I think I will be ready in time for the Chicago Marathon. I would like to get another marathon in so I am thinking about racing at the end of the month but it sucks because I got IMWI to try to sign up for.

I want to sign up for the Las Vegas Marathon - but I don't I can do it (the race, not signing up!).

The longest run I have in the last 8 months is 9 miles - and I just did that a couple days ago. I could do a HM right now with no problems, but I have to look at a marathon plan and see if I can work up to it in 3 months. I also don't want to sacrafice my tri training too much either. Maybe I can drop 1 swim and 1 short bike and run instead.

well bike and swim do help with the run. YOu can do the marathon I am sure. I have it before. it was fun. I thought about doing it again but with my 24 hour race later that month I can not afford it.

Maybe you're right - I checked a plan by Hal Higdon, and it looks like all the short runs during the week are even less than I do now. The big item is the long run on the weekend. Maybe I will start to increase the miles and see how it goes.

Thanks

Getting my buffalo butt out the door in the morning to be in the pool by 5 am is my strong point. I'm not fast but I could swim for 2 hours every day and never get tired of it. I swim to ward off back pain and to stay strong. It's my anti-depressant, therapy, meditation and key to my sanity. Funny thing is I didn't even learn how to swim 'til I was 35, was always afraid of the water, now it's my salvation.

Hey Akidoman,

I am considering (strongly) doing the Las Vegas Half as Elvis.  I figure even if it takes all day it will be my "13.1 miles as the King".

I don't know that any one of the three is my best.  I'm pretty good at not giving up and being determined to finish, so I'm going with that as my strong point.

That's not a bad idea - I think you will be in good company, there should be lot's of Elvis's (or is it "Elvie"?).

As a matter of fact I personally know a couple that are in shows, but I don't think they are running...

I will probably do the half for sure - just have to see if I can make the full distance - I have never done one before....

I'm pretty good at the post race party.

Seriously...running is my strongest point. I come from a running background (ex high school sprinter) and I know that even if I have a bad day on the bike or the swim, I know that I can get through the run. I love the looks of people when I pass them running, especially the skinny folks.
