Subject: daily caloric intake
hey guys. listen, im new to this whole fitness, healthy world and a little skeptical/confused. what do you guys think a good number of calories per day would be for a 5 '2, 120lb female who just started running and training for a tri this year? it seems, considering my size, about 1000 is plenty. in the past, i was really skinny, ate about 800 calories per day, but was totally and completely out of shape. now that im starting to train, everybodys telling me anywhere from 1400 to 1800 but that just seems really high. what do you guys think? if i am maintaining a strong program, able to train progressively, eat healthfully and feel ok, does it make sense to add another 400- 800 calories???? thanks for any input!

1000 calories a day sounds way to low.  You'd burn at least half those calories off during a long workout.

A good rule of thumb that I have heard thrown around is that average calorie intake for an average (activity wise) person is their weight times 10. (So for you, 1200 calories). Then you add according to your additional activity level (which for a triathlete is very high, obviously). I liked the link that was posted earlier. That will probably give you a more accurate idea.

I agree that 1000 calories sounds very low. I would guess that with all of your training 1400-1800 is a good range for you. However, you know your body better than anyone else. You probably need to just experiment and find the level where you have plenty of energy for your workouts and where your weight remains steady. If you feel like you need to add some calories, I would suggest adding them slowly until you find your ideal caloric intake.

In Sally Edwards book Triathlons for Women she estimates daily calorie allowance for different weights.

For weight of 120
competitive triathletes need 2200 calories
highly active need 2160
active need 1920
moderately active need 1680
low active need 1440
completely sedentary need 1200

This is an estimate and everyone's body is different. But I think you do need more calories. An example of doing something and how many calories are burned just for that activity. I played soccer today for 1.5 hours and my heart rate moniter estimates I burned 907 calories.
