I am proud to say that I donated blood for the first time ever yesterday - all other attempts ended with arms looking like pin cushions. I did this around 2 PM - did anyone have issues with fatigue and how long did it last? I knew not to do any strenous exercise 5-6 hours after, but last nights swim and today's bike were a bit of an effort.

It certainly won't stop me from doing it again, I just want to plan it out better next time and I would encourage everyone else to do the same if they can!

For me the first day or two after I am the most affected.  I would say it takes me about a week to really feel normal (ok "normal" may not be the most appropriate word      ).

I wish the Red Cross would quit bugging me!  I have a message on my answering machine about once a week since I became eligible after my last donation.  I am really starting to feel GUILTY about not donating, but I have a century ride coming up and don't want to give until after that.  (Actually, the part about them bugging me is said with some sarcasm.  Giving blood is a great thing to do and I'll be back at it next month.)

I think it takes me a couple of weeks to get back to my baseline after donating.

Still, it is worth it

Geez, I hope its not that long - I have a race in a week and a half. I better start pounding the iron pills! Thanks for the feedback, I will do this different next time.

Takes everybody a couple of weeks even if they feel normal.

When I donated whole blood it took me 24 hours before I would attempt any training. Then I switched to donating blood platelets and I could go for a run 2 hours later.

I've been donating blood 3 - 4 times a year for at least 10-years. I only had any type of issue once and that was my own fault for running hard that morning and not eating breakfast before letting them to take blood. I can't say I have ever really felt any fatigue from donating, and often I'll go for a run within a few hours after the donation. I'm not a doctor, but I would say plan your donation on a day where you won't be exercising at a high intesity...but an easy workout shouldn't be a problem. At least it never has been for me. Always be sure to hydrate well before and after donating.
