So tomorrow I will be doing my 5th sprint triathlon of the season. So far this year I've performed better race after race, but tomorrow I will be faced with a unique combination of new foes..

1 - The weather: With winds in the 20mph range along with heavy rain.

2 - The 'big' hill: A 1.2 mile 6 degree grade hill that right out of the transition area. Hill also features fairly wide turns.

Now, as to my questions:

1 - Does the climbing technique change in the rain? I have never done a hill this long with this steep of a grade. My initial plan was to alternate spinning with short periods of standing, but in the rain will this be as effective?

2 - Coming DOWN the hill heading back into T2... Should I ride the brakes to avoid gaining too much speed? With this grade and length and my hefty size (280lbs) I am afraid that I could easily break 40mph without pedaling... how would YOU handle this downhill?

Thanks in advance BT, you guys always save me.

Josh

No. Just avoid the painted lines on the road as they can be very slippery.

2 - Coming DOWN the hill heading back into T2... Should I ride the brakes to avoid gaining too much speed? With this grade and length and my hefty size (280lbs) I am afraid that I could easily break 40mph without pedaling... how would YOU handle this downhill?

Your stopping distance will increase under wet conditions. So yes it's probably not a bad idea to keep your speed down. Make sure not to ride your brakes so hard that you overheat your rim (although that's probably not too much of an issue if conditions are wet). Better to come into transition 30 seconds later than to stack on the road.

Personally, Id bomb down the hill if it is straight. If there is a turn or anything, sure, slow down. Otherwise, your brakes will work pretty good, just give them a check here and there down the hill to get the water off em. I would not ride them the whole way down.

Going up the hill.. thats rough being that it is right out of the T1. I would definitely start easy, high cadence. As your legs warm up, start increasing speed and reduce cadence some. If the hill is that long, I would definitely stand a few times to ease the tension on the lower back.

Those winds sound BRUTAL! Hopefully its a tailwind going up the hill!

Other than that... best of luck!

Watch out for paint, avoid puddles as they tend to have broken pavement or holes under them if you can, if the downhill is into transition they will probably have folks yelling at you to slow down.

Another hint, if you have a small tupperware like plastic container a little bigger than a shoe box, put your running shoes, socks and anything else you need for T2 in there along with a small hand towel of course you will want a lid on this container and have it not to big. Mine is about 6x12 but I'm a women and have smaller feet than most men. It is much nicer to start your run with dry shoes and it much faster T2 than putting stuff in bags and digging them out.

Have fun tomorrow..you'll be just like a kid..running, swimming and biking in the rain getting dirty and having a blast! When I race in the rain I feel like I'm 12 again...

A mental note - go into it knowing that most people will ride more cautiously because they're NOT wargaming it like you are.  Use this to your advantage.  If they are riding like pansies, but you know you can handle the situation, ATTACK!  Break their will!  Show them a roostertail and yell "NOT TODAY, WEAKLING, FOR I AM STRONGER THAN YOU!"

Sorry... got a little excited there.  However, I do mean what I say.  I used to race motorcycles and most everyone in the paddock would talk about how cautiously they planned to ride.  Sure, exercise due diligence, but don't get stupid - your tires will stick, you will be cooler from the rain, and miles are miles, regardless of the weather.

Give it hell, dude!

I ended a sentence with a preposition and left a dangling participle.

I hate that.
