WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick agreed on Monday to plead guilty in a dog-fighting case that could wreck the star's football career.

His attorney, Thomas Shuttleworth, told Reuters that Vick reached a deal with prosecutors and will plead guilty in the case that has attracted worldwide attention.

Had Vick not cut a deal, the 27-year-old multi-millionaire was likely to face a new indictment with more charges, legal sources have said.

Vick could face jail and his football future is in doubt. The National Football League, whose season begins next month, suspended the three-time Pro Bowl selection after the indictment.

A strong-armed quarterback and breakaway runner who is one of the NFL's most dynamic players, Vick is accused of helping run an interstate dog-fighting enterprise known as "Bad Newz Kennels" from 2001 through April 2007.

Dogfighting, in which two dogs bred to fight are placed in a pit to attack one another for spectators' entertainment and gambling, is illegal in the United States.

Vick had initially denied direct involvement in the pit bull fights that the indictment said took place on his property in Virginia.

Prosecutors charged that dogs sometimes fought to the death and some losing or underperforming dogs had been shot, drowned, hanged, electrocuted or killed by being slammed to the ground.

I believe there is a bear cage in Serbia that would be suitable for his incarceration.

Ugh. I really hate everything about this story. I want the man to suffer for what he and his friends/associates did to those animals but... that's not the kind of energy I want to send out into the world. I think part of his sentencing should include thousands of hours of community service at an SPCA or animal shelter.

That's the single best comment I've heard about this whole affair since the story broke.

That really is appropriate restitution for his crimes.

If this POS is allowed to play football again I hope someone `gets knocked into him' and tears up his knee up so he can never play again.

First time in the COJ forum...I don't know where I've been!!

He ABSOLUTELY disgusts me!!
Thank GOD I didn't get him as my QB in my fantasy league...that would have sucked!!

I don't wish anyone ill will, but he's an a-hole, and I hope he spends plenty of time in jail for doing what he did to those poor dogs!

Unpopular position here - but I still can't believe that what he was accused of, and now apparently admits to, is a federal felony.

I wondered why it was a federal offense. Did they snare him with the interstate commerce/crime nature of the offense? And can't the state still prosecute him?

Edit to include this find:  On Friday at the federal courthouse here, Purnell A. Peace, 35, of Virginia Beach and Quanis L. Phillips, 28, of Atlanta pleaded guilty to conspiring to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiring to sponsor a dog in an animal-fighting venture.

Good. Throw him into a ring with an animal that has been beaten until it wants to hurt him and then shoot him after its over.
