Subject: Foot Fall Asleep--anyone?
Can you guys help? Whenever i ride my bike more than like 5 miles, my left foot falls asleep. I have cages on my pedals, not the actual toe clips. I think it might have something to do with how my foot sits in the cage. I try to look down and keep my foot straight and my toe pointing straight, but i notice that sometimes it is turned sideways. Is there a WRONG way to have the cage on? Would this have anything to do with my foot falling asleep? it's not a big deal bc my leg does the work and not my actual foot, but it is quite painfull at times and uncomfortable. Does this happen to anyone else? I've been working out solid for a year and a half if not more. I'm still very overweight so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

thanks,
Jennifer

There are a lot of different possibilities for this.  A few things I can think of: your bike is not correctly set up (seat height, bar height, etc.), the position of your feet is off while you are riding, your shoes are tied too tight.  I used cages before I got clipless pedals without a problem, but I definitely had problems when my shoes were laced too tight and I tried to ride.

My foot was falling alseep back in Feb. I found out that my shoe was a 1/2 size to small. I have also heard that if your shoe is to tight it can fall asleep on you while riding.

I was having the same issue. I raised my seat 1 notch, and it went away. Little adjustments make a big difference.

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out the same thing. My left foot can fall asleep biking, running, or even sitting at my desk. I thought it might be my road ID, but that doesn't explain the desk. Maybe I just have a habit of tightenig my left shoe too much.

I don't know at what point it could warrant a doctor visit, but I know it could eventually.

You could most likely use a profesional  cleat adjustment, it help me alot. also your shoes my be too tight for when your feet swell?

I would echo the cleat adjustment and would also recommend a professional bike fit - if you find someone good they will look at both your bike and your cleats/shoes when they are doing the fit

My foot hasn't fallen asleep since I had my bike fit done

maybe it's just the shoes bc this happened yesterday when i was running too. but only on the left foot. As for the bike fit, i assume mine is all good size/fit-wise bc i just bought it a few months ago and had it fitted for me by the professionals in the store. I got it at a cycling-specific shop.

Many people have a slightly (or not so slightly) larger left foot.

I have great shoes, a good fit on my bike; but I still get a little numbness here and there on long rides.  I try to remember to wiggle my toes and shift occassionally (shift the way I'm sitting; shift the focus to pushing down more with my heel or pulling up more).  Also "relax".  Does the trick.

I get numbness in my feet while riding my bike as well. I can't figure it out though because it happens on my mountain bike, on my road bike and also at the two different types of bikes at the gym. So that takes away all of the issues of a particular shoe, a particular bike fit and all of that stuff cause i've used it on all different types. Although maybe I will try the loosening the shoe thing because I do keep my shoes pretty tight....
