Subject: Odor in your performance wear?
Now I know Ive seen this topic before somewhere, but didnt believe it would happen, I guess.

After time, Ive heard that your performance (wicking poly) wear will start to hold odor to it, even after diligent washing.

If anyone knows of a way to to alleviate this Id sure like to know instead of trashing the apparel thats 'supposed' to 'perform' better... haha. Actually, it performs great, but is odiferous now. What do you do? Thanks.

I don't know what you're talking about...just because my wife won't let my workout clothes in the house doesn't mean anything.

It does happen. The best approach I've had is to shower in them. That makes it so normal washing stands a chance.

Method:

1) Workout
2) Get in shower
3) Lather
4) Take off clothes
5) Wash nasty self
6) Let clothes dry, then toss in laundry
7) ???
8) Profit!

Win detergent.  Works for me.

X2 for Win. I do large batches of all my gear about every 2 months and regular laundry after every use.

Or, 1 scoop of Oxy Clean in a 3gal bucket of water. Handwash everything in that.

BTW: Works great for stinky bike helmet odor. Pull the pads, then plunge / pull ht ehlemt in and out of the bucket, then rinse and dry in sunshine.

actually, I had the same problem and found that a simple solution works for me.

Wash your tech gear in HOT water using a detergent and/or fabric softener with Febreze in it.  Add a scoop of OxyClean.

I'll have to try WIN.

Right now, periodically, I gather the worst offenders and:
1) Spray w/Febreeze - the antimicrobial one
2) Wash (we have an HE washer) w/prewash of oxyclean, extra water, extra rinse, regular detergent NO FABRIC SOFTENER, water a bit warmer than normal. One time for a set of older stuff w/extra perma stink that I thought was going to result in them being tossed in the garbage, I used the sanitary setting (pretty hot). It worked - figured that's what I do w/cloth diapers...
3) Hang dry, not in the sun
4) Spray again w/the Febreeze

It does work. I honestly can't say what it does to the long term performance of the clothing, but I can say I've been mistreating performance wear for years and the worst that has happened is pilling on fleece (so I turn it inside out now) and the wicking stops working if you use fabric softener (same for towels & diapers, I've learned). I'm sure there's someone out there with a horror story, but either I've been lucky or unobservant.

Sometimes I do step 1 right after I take sweaty clothes off or get them out of my gym bag. That would be best, but it doesn't always happen.

I've heard adding vinegar to the wash works.

I thought I had read or heard somewhere that hot water can damage technical fabrics, and that fabric softeners can affect wicking properties. Anyone else heard this??

I tried WIN for a while and it works ok, but I found it to be expensive. I have been just adding some distilled vinegar to each load. It works just as well and is much cheaper. I have also heard good things about OxyClean, but haven't used it.

Watch out with with putting performance clothing in the dryer because it breaks down the Lycra, and don't use fabric softner because it interferes with the wicking properties of the fabric. Just air dry. I have an indoor folding drying frame that works well.

I've also heard that using 1.5x the amount of laundry detergent will wrok okay, but I haven't tried it. Not to be sexist, but my wife does the clothes.

I recently obtained some funk in my workout clothes. Who knew I could smell soooo bad! I took the suggestion of using a cup of white vinegar to my wash along with detergent. The funk is now gone...at least until I add some more.

I just soaked my running clothes in Biz. The water was a pretty disgusting color when I was finished--that must've been the "funk." They smell like new now.
