Subject: swiming question
I would like to sign up for a tri in May. One of the required fields is time in a 400m swim. I have had sceduling problems with getting to the pool ( two kids and a wife that works second shift). I hope to get to the pool soon and on a regular bassis. I do know how to swim but have no idea as to how long a sloooow 400m swim should take. I would like to register soon so as to not be shut out. Could someone give me a few ideas so I can get a reasonable time to put into the form.

A "slooow" 400 meters swim would be 12 minutes - if you are a reasonable swimmer, though, you should really be looking at about 10 minutes for a comfortable but steady swim.

It sounds like this may be a pool swim and they are trying to start the swim from fastest to slowest to make it go smoothly and they can stagger the start. Be conservative in the time you turn in, because there are usually some "sandbaggers" that will over estimate their swim.

I did a try a tri in 98. I didn't do one swim work out or run in training but I was still bike racing a lot. I think the 400 meter swim took 12 minutes. The swim itself wasn't bad but I spent a lot of time in the transition area. My heart rate was way high and I needed a few minutes before I got on my bike. Just a few swims to learn your pace should be good enough provided you know how to swim.
