I am doing my first ironman in July 08. IM Austria....

What bike would you recommend for this distance.

Currently I have a beginner road racer with clip on bars that served me well for im 70.3 in UK.

price bracket $2000 - $2750 to spend.

Your help is much appreciated.

Simon

I'm just a newbie, but I'm guessing anything in that price range would work fine. Look for the best components you can find for $2750 and make sure it fits. Don't forget Ebay, you can get almost new bikes on there for practically half the money.

The best bike for IM is the one that fits you properly and you have experience riding.  There is no magic bike.  Given your price range, dozens of high quality bikes meet your needs.

Austria?  If the route involves a lot of climbing you might be better off with the road bike than a tri bike.  Sounds like it has served you well so far.

Good luck!

One of the first things I did after registering for IMLP was to schedule a fitting with an experienced tri bike shop. Rather than getting close on my road bike I found I liked the tri position much better and bought a tri specific bike. We spent almost 5 hours between the initial fitting and the final set up. I am much more comfortable and seem much stronger now.

Regardless of what you decide to buy, I highly recommend, as others have that a proper fitting is a must!

A really fast one.  Seriously though, get one that fits, you should be able to find plenty for what you have to spend.

Definitely get the one that best fits....I tried about eight different tri bikes and manufacturers. For me, I found the Trinity A1 the best fit in seated position and best fit while in areobar position! The price was right and the LBS was willing to swap out stuff including a compact crank.

I like the GIANT products, but try as many options as possible.......you will regret it if you purchase the wrong bike.

It seems to me like manufacturers are all making the same style of frames now. I say, get the cheapest bike possible that has an aero frame and then spend the rest on good race wheels. How about a Cervelo Dual with Zipps? Well, the Zipps would throw it out of your price range, but I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives. For $520 you can get a Renn disc.

I have about $2300 to spend on either upgrading my roadbike or investing in a tri-bike. It looks like I can pick-up a carbon Q-Roo tri bike for about 2k. Would you recommend getting a really nice set of aero wheels for the road bike or getting a tri-specific ride?

You should post this question at www.slowtwitch.com. Those guys are real gear geeks, so they'll know what to do. A lot of really ridiculously fast people post there too, so they have experience with all kinds of equipment. Be warned that they can be less friendly than BT, though.

Ssheahan, you might want to get the opinion of the slowtwitchers too.
