Expert 755 SF-Bay Area | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! This is an interesting thread, because boiled down, there a few questions being discussed here: Q1: what is a triathlon? A: Apply the USAT Rules & Regs (the sport's governing body). If the competition conforms, it is a triathlon. Q2: what can be called a triathlon? A: Anything. There is no trademarking (AFAIK) of the term triathlon, like there is of Ironman. So, go ahead, call your indoor tri a tri. But, the fact that the competition requires the "indoor" part in the name reveals alot. Q3: what is a triathlete? A: IMO, anybody who trains and lives the lifestyle of swim, bike, and run. Some people will require completing a USAT-defined triathlon for themselves, others not. Q4: should we get caught up in labels? A: Up to you. I personally don't give a rats' behind about labels. Call yourself or your races what you like. Just keep SBR'ing and enjoy the process. |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! You swim, then you bike, then you run, and the object is to do all three faster than the other people you're competing against. There's a winner, someone comes in last, and everyone gets a t-shirt. Sounds like a triathlon to me. I've done a couple--basically the same format as yours, except 30 minutes on a bike and 20 minutes on the treadmill with a bonus for each degree of incline you set. They're fun. Not as much fun as an "outdoor triathlon", but worth doing, if only for the workout. |

Is running 26.2 on the treadmill a marathon? If you go and do it, I'll happily proclaim you a marathoner and challenge anyone else to say you're not. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! By the way, the Oxford English Dictionary states a triathlon is:
In addition, I believe this indoor tri is sponsored by the athletic club and being billed as a triathlon. Quite a bit different from "running 26.2 on the treadmill and calling it a marathon", if arguing that it most be a formal event. (Although if you were wondering the OED doesn't actually specifiy "contest" in all of their definitions of marathon and so actually you could say you "ran a marathon" if you covered the mileage.) |

Elite 4235 Spring, TX | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! What does the dictionary say about the definition of 'race.' To the OP, whatever you decide to call yourself is your decision and the rest of us can go back and forth until we're blue in the face and it won't have any impact on how you feel about what you've done. It sounds like a fun competition, but until you're out racing other people it's a whole different sport. |

Master 2202 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! I thought more about this... its definitely a triathlon.. just a boring one if you ask me. Most of us arent in the sport just to get the title "triathlete". I mean, if I wanted a cool title Id be racing cars or joining a rock band. Last time I checked chicks werent flocking to me for my triathlete title. |

Veteran 171 Jacksonville | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! I think it is a diluted triathlon experience. Where is the fight against other triathletes for your spot in the water, where is the use of bike skills on ever changing terrain, the dodging of roadkill, what about the blazing sun during your run. Do they turn off the AC in the gym during an indoor triathlon? |

First and foremost, thanks to everyone who has encouraged me to do this. Your words have really helped cement this in my head that it's a good idea to become involved with. The indoor tri....It's a baby step. I'm a 350 pound dude, I'm doing this to save my own life by being a healthier ....not to win a medal. Once I pull this one off, and keep working at it all winter, I'll be out there in the lakes, on the pavement, and under the sweltering sun with the "real" triathletes. |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! jasonbohn9 - 2007-09-05 10:52 AM So, one of the Health Clubs around here is promoting a Tri coming up, and I was thinking about doing it for my first Tri. It doesn't have any set distances, but what it boils down to is a: 10 minutes of swimming 20 minutes on an exercise bike 15 minutes on a treadmill Basically they add up the distance totals for each aspect and thats how they determine where you finish. Can this even be a tri? If I do it can I call myself a Triathlete? Has anyone else done something like this, and could you provide me any advice? Technically it's a triathlon because you did these 3 different disciplines all back to back. But is it a race... well, not really. I think you should do it as it will be a good introduction to the sport and probably fun. Keep in mind though that swimming/cycling/running OUTSIDE is totally different from doing it inside. So... go do it and have fun. Then sign up for an outdoor triathlon and make that your first race! |

The race is to see who goes the farthest in a certain amount of time. My thinking as well. Another BTer recently did a 24-hour triathlon as part of a team, they were given 24 hous to do as many triathlons as they could. That was certainly a race, and not much different than this concept. |

It is a tri because there are the 3 diciplines. But I guess to me... a real race for a triathlon is done outside. Yes, I know the whole "but what about a pool swim" arguement can come into play here. When I envision a trialthon, I see it outside. And honestly, I kind of hate pool swims for "outdoor" tri's. So yea, doen't make a whole lotta sense to anyone but me I'm sure. |

Expert 626 | Subject: RE: Is an indoor Tri, really a tri ?!?!?! Hey, I like it. Probably appeals to people who have never done anything like it before and if it convinces more people to exercise and maybe then do a 'real' outdoors triathlon, it's great. The hardest part about exercise is starting - taking that first step. The biggest challenge in getting our increasingly obese population interested in exercise is getting them to take that first step. Something do-able, safe, non-threatening like an indoor triathlon - brilliant! (Gosh, sorry if what I typed was redundantly repetitive) |
