How hard is it to transition from HIM to IM? I just started doing tri's this year and i have my first HIM in 10 days. I'm already looking towards an IM, assuming i like the HIM distance. How hard is it to go from a newbie my first year to IM my second year? Or should i shoot for a full year of HIM's first and then step up to the full the following year?

I would base your decision a lot on how your HIM goes. If it goes well and you have the time to increase the training hours to make the IM distance go for it.

My disclaimer is that I've never done either, planned on doing the same half as your are about to try until I got hurt. I'll be doing it or another one next year and hoping to move to the Full IM in two years but a lot is based on how the Half goes.

That's exactly what I did.  Capped of my first season with a HIM.  Capped off my second season with an IM.  One year to build HIM endurance/fitness into IM endurance/fitness is very doable.

Like the other poster stated, assuming your HIM goes reasonably well, you should be well on your way to an IM a year from now.

If I complete with strength in the HIM, will be ok to pick up the FULL IRON BT 20 week training plan and go from there (the workouts are not that bad). That would have me into an Ironman right around April.

plan-
Half Iron Oct 20th
Full Iron next April

I'm planning on making the jump to IM, too!

Finished my first season of triathlon with a 5:40 finish at the Big Kahuna this weekend, and finished with a smile (most important part to me).

Can anyone recommend a good IM-distance race (the closer to California the better) at the end of the '08 season?  Doesn't have to be WTC race.

Vineman is supposed to be good. Enginerd did that one this year, so he'd be a good one to talk to. I'm planning on taking next year to build up my HIM base (Wildflower, Vineman 70.3, and Big Kahuna), but if I do really well at Wildflower I might go for the full Vineman instead of the half.
