Subject: Can I train for running races AND triathlons?
Here's the deal...
For '05, I'd like to up my running mileage to 40 mpw so I can improve my running racetimes (5k-15k's in the spring, and a marathon in the Fall). But I also would like to complete a Half IM over the summer.

My dilemma is, how do I train for both? Most tri training plans call for much lower weekly mileage. Obviously, if I add in additional running miles, I'm going to kill myself. So, can I replace a ride or swim with a run to get my miles up? Will that mess up my triathlon training? Or, am I going be forced to choose between higher running mileage or the Half IM.

Thanks for any insight.
Walt

I would say it probably depends on what result you're looking for in your races.  If you want to compete for your age group or just really do well, you might want to consider just focusing on one.

There are a number of people on this site who did a 1/2 IM in the summer and a fall marathon.  I don't know what they thought of their results, but I was "satisfied" with mine.  I'm a MOP to BOP'er, I think I could have done better, but if you ask most people who race they'd probably say the same thing.

Bottom line, if you wanna do both, I say go for it.  Good luck.

IMHO, your goals are completely compatible. Find a good half IM training program with an early summer race in mind, THEN up your mileage for the fall marathon. You don't say where your training is now, but you'll at least have to up the running mileage to 20-25 MPW to complete the half mary in the half IM. You can do that, and build speed, on four days running per week if you focus on quality runs. I include a tempo run, an interval workout, a moderate distance, and a LSD in my running week.

I trained for Chicago Marathon and did a couple centuries, while simultaneously training for sprint tris in late summer, and didn't "kill myself" (much to the disappointment of some here).Tentatively I'm planning a halfIM in early April and the Flying Pig in early May.

No problem, as Bear points out. I trained all year for triathlons only, which naturally led to improved run times, both short and long. My key race was a half IM in July, which left me in good shape (mileage wise) to push up running distances for fall marathon season.

I say go for it!  My times have improved because of my tri cross training.

Hmmm....interesting thought that the cross training from triathlons actually made you guys faster runners.

I'm currently doing about 25+ mpw. I was usually at about 20 mpw, but I had a month or so of 30 mpw during the summer and I felt I was handling it well. Which makes me think that 40 is doable, and certainly would enable me to get in a good base for a fall '05 marathon. I was planning on running one this fall, but my knee started to bother me once my long runs started to near 15 miles, which is why I feel I need a really solid base.

At this point, I'm thinking I'm going to finish this year following more or less a tri training plan, with more of a running focus (i.e. get in a couple swims and a couple bike rides with 4, maybe 5 days of running.) Then I'll train for a half IM in May (perhaps I'll bump up the running mileage just a bit). And then I'll have 6 months to build a base and train for a marathon.

It's just so hard to try to focus on any one thing. Thanks for your help.

Make sure you build that mileage slowly.  No more than 10% a week.  Your long runs should be run at least 2 minutes slower than your planned race pace.  Speed work comes later in the training.  I used the Galloway training method.  Saved my knees (IT Band).

Good Luck
