What is the swim like? Do you swim from one side of the lake to the other? Is there a map? Are there buoy's? Can I swim back stroke?

This is my first triathlon. I've had surgery on both of my shoulders in the last 11 months, the most recent being 5 months ago. If I can make it through the swim, I can make it to the finish line. I grew up in the water on Long Island and moved out to AZ 3 years ago. I plan to use back stroke throughout the swim so that it doesn't put too much stress on my shoulders. My only fear right now is being kicked and dislocating my shoulder again. I've been in the pool only 3 times a week to avoid inflammation. Right now I'm swimming 5-8 laps in an oly sized pool twice for my workout. I've stuck to my physical therapy, been lifting weights, running, and riding the bike for distance.

My plan is to will myself through the swim at my own pace. I won't let myself fail. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time, and I'm not going to let anything stop me.

I'm sure the swim map is on the site. You can swim anyway you'd like. Typically, it's out and around bouys in a big rectangle.

Red rock didn't post a map for this one for some reason. The swim is usually a big rectangle. You swim from Tempe beach park under the Mill Ave bridge, turn left at a bouy, swim about 3/4 of the way across, turn left again and swim back to a final bouy, one more left and head for the steps where you got in.

It looks like you'll be in the first wave at 6:30AM, so there shouldn't be any confusion with the Oly distance swimmers. They will likely have a longer rectangle or possibly 2 laps of the same.

Backstroke is usually a tough proposition, though there are people doing it at every race. My only advice there is to flip over and site the bouy every 10 strokes or so. You should be able to place yourself at the outside of the pack to avoid getting kicked, but you also don't want to have to swim more than you need to. Go wide, but keep checking in to make sure you're going straight.

Good luck!

P.S. I almost forgot the swim exit! If you have shoulder dislocation issues this might be a problem. There are slippery steps, and volunteers there trying to hoist you up by the arms if you let them. Take your time there, and don't let some thoughtful helper yank your arm out

As much as I want this, it isn't worth dislocating my shoulder again and having another surgery. I'm only 5 months post-op on my right shoulder, and have been told it takes 1-2 years to get back to 100%. I've been training a lot, but don't think it's worth the risk right now. If this tri was a month away, I would feel more confident.

Maybe you could try some duathlons while you are waiting for your shoulder to heal. Check out trifamilyracing.com, they usually have a DU whenever they have a tri There's one coming up in October.

Don't forget about Relays. I've never done one, but you could avoid the swim this way until you r shoulder heals while still participating.

I just got back from the pool. 400M back stroke. Then 4x100 with one minute rest. No problems. Uggh!
