I'm looking at doing my first Half Ironman in the first part of Sep next year followed by my first marathon the first part of Nov. I was thinking about doing the half iron program for bike and swim and the run portion of the full iron program. Would that work or should I just follow the half iron program and the almost 2 months after the half iron do an abridged version a marathon program. Or is it to close for such distances for a novice like myself.

Why not just use a marathon program for the running?

I don't want to overdue anything and I think that much running along with swimming and bike time is going to be more time than I have.

I did my first HIM this past weekend and will do my first marathon October 7. I did the half iron program with the marathon program overlayed on it to replace the half iron's run workouts. So far so good! I don't think I'll have any problem being recovered & ready for the mary.

What has your average training volume been on this program. I figure I will have about 6 - 8 hours a week to train. Will that be enough.

My training was VERY erratic due to several weeks of travel, moving halfway across the country and minor injury. I'm no expert, but with consistent 6-8 hour weeks I think you'll be fine. Here's a plot of my weekly volume from the beginning of April through (including) my HIM on Sunday:
