Subject: the sluggish fast run?
last night i went for what was supposed to be an easy 4.5 mile run. i had planned it to take about 50 minutes (so, about an 11 min mile pace, which these days is moderate to slow for a solo run). my husband and daughter (older daugter is at grandmas) would meet me at 6pm at the video store near our home. i left the house at 5:10 or so. i took the first mile slowly, and was surprised that i had run it in under 10 minutes. i 'downshifted' and slowed my pace a bit. before i knew it, i had covered a ton of ground and had to double check my watch against the stopwatch. i felt like i was going sooo slowly, and worried that i would be late getting back - but in reality i was running 8.5 min miles!i ended up getting to the video store 10 minutes early. i couldn't believe it. if i hadn't been paying such close attention to the time, i would have thought the stopwatch was off somehow. does anyone else experience this?

I think your aerobic capacity is increasing without you knowing it....what was the effort like? you mentioned downshifting........so did you have any other clues about your effort HR etc.

Uh, no. I never run faster than I think I am. I wish.

i didn't wear my hrm on purpose yesterday. it broke before my half marathon last weekend, and while i have another strap that works, i'm trying to do at least a couple runs w/o it from now on so that i can focus on perception.

but to answer your question - effort felt moderate. i was tired and felt slow, but i never had the urge to slow down again after that initial 'downshift'. i didn't feel like i was pushing very hard, but tried to keep my effort consistent (especially since i was meeting up with my husband at a specific time).

maybe i should mention that this was only my second run since my 1/2m. i had a wierd reverse taper - 4 rest days after the 1/2m, then a 6m run, then 2 rest days, then this 4.5 mile run.

Looking at your logs, it looks like you have been going through a slow phase (similar to where I have been lately). This may be the reason for the faster pace. I find that if I am steadily performing workouts at a pace then take some time off, 4-5 days of not running, when I get back on the road my pace increases without extra effort. Basically due to the fact that you have let your body recover.

Great feeling isn't it, when running, cycling, etc. feels as if you are going at a very slow pace and you end up going much faster expected!! :-O

Congrats

Isn't it wonderful when all those days of drudge training just come togather for that "ahah" moment!  Great Job!!

my whole running career (all 8 months of it) have been one big slow phase!

really though, my average pace is hard to gauge, since i run outdoors, often pushing my kids in the double jogger, and like to vary where i run.

Maybe I should have said that differntly, story of my life. What I meant was it looks like you were taking time off from training / running. When I do this I find that my pace increases significantly becuase I am well rested...

Adios

I can't explain it like some of the others, but I can say that I wish it continues to happen to you.
