So many good one but the "people think you are crazy" is still my favorite.  Living in Texas you get strange looks when it is hot or cold.  I like both for different reasons, but either way I love the looks on peoples faces as I go run in the freezing rain (when it happens) as they head out to lunch to eat their Fat Food.

My favorite is the hard-a$$ reason.  I used to beat better runners on my track teams when we trained in the rain because they couldn't get over the suck factor.  "Boo hoo, I'm catching cold.  Doesn't coach know about hypothermia?  Why didn't the cancel practice.  Boo hoo hoo."  My reasoning was, "This sucks so go faster so that the suck doesn't last as long."

Weather is what it is.  Deal and train.

RE: Why I Love Training in Bad (cold) Weather:

(x) Living in Wisconsin, its either that or don't train outside for six months...who wants that?
(y) Frozen snot/spit/crusty nose

(z) Road grime stripe up your back
(a) Getting rained on while in the water just strikes a chord
(b) The "hey, what a nut bag" looks you get
(c) Wiping down and spiffing up my chariot
(d) The "not too hot" situation others have mentioned - my best runs have been in cold (30F) weather
(e) Getting into my own thoughts (even more) with the dearth of others on the road/trail
and so on, and so on

I thought it was 11 months.  The other month is road construction month.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to compile it and stick it to my fridge so I can remind myself when I'm dragging my feet and being a lazy @#*. I'm more motivated than I have ever been this time of year to train and I think it helps that this is the first year I'm training for tri rather than just to not be fat over the winter

1. Less People.
2. I like the tough guy theme that's been ripling through the thread.
3. For whatever reason, it is easier for me to reflect on life and other things.
4. The competition is sleeping or curled up to the fire somewhere, or enjoying a nice toasty tread mill workout.
5. The smell. Nothing smells better than a rainstorm/snowstorm.

I love seeing the vapor in the air from the warm breath on cold air

the crunch of leaves under my feet

NO HUMIDITY--unless it's just raining then it feels good

the shadows from barren trees are cool too--with the differences in the sky depending on the season and time of day I get out there

Because you like how the hard rain feels like many needles hitting your skin.

  • running on fresh fallen snow
  • looking ahead and seeing nothing but white expanse
  • looking behind and seeing my own footsteps in all that white expanse
  • the crunch of the snow beneath my feet
  • the twinkling of sunlight on ice crystals
  • the hot shower followed by a bowl of hot chicken soup after a wintery run

I love to run in the snow and do it practically every day during the winter...oh wait, I live in Atlanta and there is a global warming trend.  Ok, I never run in the snow.

I had completely forgotten about the smell of the rain.  Thanks for the reminder.
