Pre-race routine:

Small bowl of cereal. poweraide. Just try to stay relaxed
Event warmup:

I didn't get wet early. I just Tried to get loose
Swim
  • 1h 04m 54s
  • 2112 yards
  • 03m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

THE WATER WAS COMPLETLY BLACK. I WAS PANICKY AT FIRST AND JUST COULDN'T BREATHE. PEOPLE SWIMMING ALL OVER ME. I CALMED DOWN AND GOT BACK TO NORMAL SWIMMING. WATER WAS CHOPPY AND I GOT SEA SICK TWICE. YOU HAVEN'T LIVED TILL YOU DRY HEAVE WHILE SWIMMING. I NAVIGATED PRETTY WELL. NOT TOO TIRED AT THE END.....BUT MY STOMACH AND BACK HURT FROM THE DRY HEAVES.
What would you do differently?:

PRACTICE IN THE DARK WATER AND BE USED TO NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE YOUR HANDS AND ARMS AS YOU SWIM. AND AS THE TIME SHOW......LEARN A MORE EFFECIENT STROKE
Transition 1
  • 08m 19s
Comments:

I WENT TO CHANGING TENT BECAUSE I WANTED MY GOOD BIKE SHORTS. THIS MEANT I HAD TO GO TO MY BIKE, TO THE TENT, AND THEN BACK TO BIKE. IMMEDIATLY AFTER GETTING ON BIKE YOU GO STRAIGHT UP A HILL. I WAS GLAD I KNEW THAT AND HAD THE BIKE IN A LOW GEAR.
What would you do differently?:

JUST TRY TO BE A LITTLE QUICKER. I REALLY TOOK MY TIME.
Bike
  • 4h 01m 57s
  • 56 miles
  • 13.89 mile/hr
Comments:

PEOPLE WERE WALKING THE HILLS CONSTANTLY. I WANTED SO BAD TO RIDE EVERY HILL....BUT THE HARDEST, TALLEST ONE GOT ME ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY UP. I WAS GETTNG PASSED ON THE FLATS, BUT I WAS PASSING PEOPLE ON THE HILLS. MY QUADS WERE SO TIGHT. I GAINED PLACES ON THE BIKE...BUT I WAS IN SUCH A HOLE BECAUSE OF THE POOR SWIM.
What would you do differently?:

IF I TRAINED IN THE HILLS AND HAD CONFIDENCE, I COULD HAVE PUT OUT A GREATER EFFORT. I JUST HAVE TO GET MY AVERAGE SPEED ON THE FLATS UP.
Transition 2
  • 05m 37s
Comments:

I AGAIN JUST TOOK MY TIME. I STRETCHED A BIT ALMOST LEFT WITHOUT MY RACE NUMBER. AND DECIDED AT THE LAST MINUTE TO WEAR A HAT. I RAN WITH MY BIKE SHORTS ON SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO TO DRESSING TENTS. MY ACHILLES WAS SORE BUT MY HEEL WAS NOT TOO BAD
What would you do differently?:

JUST A LITTLE MORE ORGANIZATION WOULD HELP
Run
  • 2h 46m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

THE EARLY HILLS WERE JUST SOOO HARD. I HAD TO WALK SOME, BUT I WOULD ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE IN SIGHT THAT I WOULD START RUNNING AGAIN. I DID GOOD WITH MY WATER INTAKE, GU CONSUMPTION, AND COLD SPONGES. ABOUT MILE 4 I REALLY KNEW I WAS GONNA MAKE IT.
What would you do differently?:

HILL TRAINING FOR THE RUN. I DON'T RUN HILLS AT ALL.
Post race
Warm down:

A BOTTLE OF WATER IMMEDIATLY. A BRIEF LEG MASSAGE. 2 PIECES OF PIZZA THAT WERE WONDERFUL. JUST KNOWING I HAD FINISHED FELT REALLY GREAT.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

NO HILL TRAINING, POOR SWIM STROKE

Event comments:

THE DRINK STATIONS WERE PERFECT AND THE PEOPLE IN THEM WERE JUST THE BEST. THIS RACE WAS SUPER WELL ORGANIZED AND I WOULD RECCOMEND IT TO ANYONE...BUT BE READY FOR THE HILLS

Hey Cop2Tri-
I did the Olympic distance Triamerica series at Clermont in April of this year and I KNOW the hills you are talking about. It is pure hell. A bunch of us that were doing the race did a test bike on the course before the race. That helped because if I had seen the hills for the first time at the race, I think I would be been very discouraged. Yeah, the lake there is pretty nasty too. It looks blue from the outside, but it's murky underneath. Wish I could have gone and watched the race. A bunch of TriGators from Univ. of Fla. were there competing, I know that.

Anyways, congrats on finishing it and it looks like you have some hill training to do! And yes, COgirl, there are some hills in Fla, not many but some!

Cop2Tri,

Way to go!  I did the full GFT a few years ago and barely lasted 1/4 of the way of Sugarloaf before I had to walk it.  I'm envious that you got so far up!  Great job!

I like your strategy on the run. If walking, pick a place to start running and do it. Its very motivational and is nice short goal setting. Congrats on your race.

Great accomplishment. Finishing that one is tough.

I did it last year and remember those hills and the murky water. I was prepared for the water since I competed in a sprint there several weeks before the 1/2. I practiced swimming in the pool with my eyes closed, opening them when I breathed. It helped.
