Crispin,

Active.com has the race starting at 8:00 am. Look under the Race for Literacy at the web site.

Are we planning on an 11:00 start for the ride, or are we starting earlier?

Okay, my bronchitis is abating and I should be able to breathe normally within a week.  So, count me in.  I guess if I'm not up to par by then, I can just draft off of Bethany, Crispin and Karl, since this will be a mere warmup for them! ;-)

This outing is shaping up to be a great group. It should be alot of fun!
I think running a 5k before hand to warm up is a great idea. That sounds like something I would do.

Hey Whit - I am sure if you are not up to snuff, you can just take my place in the being pulled around spot.

You guys will have a blast, maybe I'll catch the next one.

Tom, that sounds like a great idea.  Are you in?  I think we're starting the Stn Mtn ride at 10:30 (I don't mean to usurp Bethany's authority since she's in charge of all this, so we better make sure we get her sign off on the official start time).  I'd love to do a 5k.  Let me know.

for those doing the 5k what would be a good time to start/meet for the ride? if 11:00 works then let's go with that but if you need more time to make it home, change clothes, grab your bike stuff and get to the Mountain then we can make it later.

I hope we have a warm front coming through next week. forecast for next Saturday says shattered showers and high of 63 degrees. it's just down right cold and nasty out today. it's actually gotten colder as the day has gone on.

I'm not planning on registering for the run until the morning of the event. I figure from my last few races that I need less than 1min and 30 seconds to transition from biking to running. I don't need much more than that and the driving time from Dekalb to Stone Mountain say about 10 - 12 minuites. So 5k starts at 8:00 approx. 45 min to run the race and grab a t-shirt and a bagel from the sponsors. I thinking that I'm (we're) gone by 9:00 and will be waiting for everyone else if we start at the group ride at 10:30 or 11:00. The main reason I'm doing the 5k is because it is the morning of the ride and it's on the way since I'm comming from N. Atlanta.

Okay, so are you saying you want to start earlier? Like everyone meet up at 9:30?

The reason why we had set the time later in the morning is so that the weather would be a bit on the warmer side. However, it doesn't matter.

I was more saying I just don't want the 5k to throw a wrench in the group ride schedule. I should have been more clear. The group ride trumps the 5k activities. I think the schedule you had was great well and it should be a bit warmer by then. I too hope the weather takes a turn for the warmer soon,

10 am sounds good.

They are now saying 60 percent chance of rain on Saturday; this isn't looking good. But a lot can change in 8 days.

Ha! TWC is now saying 20% chance of rain on Saturday, the showers were pushed out till Tuesday. It will be cool, though, low of 47, high of 62.

Bethany, et al, I'm now jammed up on Saturday and out of the mix for the group ride.  My dad is flying into town for the weekend and it just wouldn't be right for me to bolt for 4-5 hours Saturday morning.  I am truly bummed as I was really looking forward to this ride (and doing some wheel sucking behind Bethany).  Anyway, I hope you folks have a great time.  I will miss you all, really, I will.

Tom, that means I'm also out for the 5k race beforehand.  My apologies and I hope you enjoy the run.

I guess we'll need to play it by ear.  Temps in the 40s and 50s and rain sounds a little rough for GA natives.

I'm a native of the north. When cold weather comes we wear more clothes. So I went and got a pair of long spandex pants to keep me warm for Saturday's ride. However, if it rains...that's a whole different story. Unfortunately they don't make umbrellas that attach to bikes to you dry. Plus the roads get slick. I agree, play it by ear.

Remember we are meeting at 10 AM at the parking lot outside the park in downtown Stone Mtn. If you need directions check the first page of this forum. Also, since no one volunteered to host the Ironman part then that's cancelled. Looking forward to Saturday.

So, it sounds like many of you have ridden together before. Just want to make sure I won't hold the group back or get dropped like a bad habit 10 min into the ride - what kind of pace are we talking here? I've only been riding since April and have been off the bike for about 6 weeks due to injury, but can hang reasonably well. Wondering if I should wait until the Spring to ride with you guys - after I've worn my trainer out during the cold to come??

Let me know (and be honest),

I think that I am the only one who has done the Stone Mtn. ride before. The second to last time I did it, I went around 3 times. The loop is 7 miles. I went the 21 miles in 1:22. I averaged 15.4 mph. That's no Lance speed. There's my honest answer.

Don't be scared by my comment a while back about this not being a beginner ride. I only said that because there is one particular climb where you are crawling up this hill going like 7 mph. Obviously for every uphill there is a downhill and a couple of them are quite fast (and fun!).

Now here's my plead...come and try it!!! It will be good to meet you. If you go around a couple times and feel like it's too much then feel free to take off and head home or if we are too slow for you then keep going while we head home.
