Subject: Advice for buying a wheel online

Last week I went to ride my bike for the first time in months and found out the front wheel was all bent.  Something must have fallen on it I guess.  I was going to go to the LBS but the Performance Bike catalog just came and it looks like it has some great deals.  Can I just buy any road bike front wheel or are there certain sizes I need to know about?  What is a good brand?

Thanks!

You need to know if your wheels are 650cc or 700cc.  Other than that pretty much any wheel will work on the front since you don't have to worry about gearing.

Also make sure you go clincher (if thats what you already have) unless you want to go with tubulars.

I would go to the LBS and see if they can true your wheel.  You might be able to get it fixed for very little money, then save up for some race wheels, a coach or a power meter.

Thank you!  I don't know what tubular or cinchers are but I'll find out.   I was going to see if they could fix the wheel at the LBS, but it looked so bad and a few spokes are broken too so I didn't knwo if they'd be able to fix it.  Maybe I'll go over there later today.

Clincher is what you probably have. It consists of a tire that "clinches" between the rim with a seperate tube inside.

A tubular is a tire and tube that are sealed and are glued to the rim. You usually only find these on more expensive wheels. For a training set of wheels clinchers are cheaper and usually make more sense. Good luck!

Edit:  That was your 2000th post

If you live near a performance bike store take your catalog with you and they will match the price and may beat it. They can also look at your existing wheel and see if it can be revived.
www.roadbikereview.com has a great section of wheel reviews that you can use for research. There are some manufacturers who sell direct online like neuvation - good price / value wheels also www.nashbar.com may have as good of deal.
Good luck

Ummm... how much money are you looking to spend? The term "good" has a lot of different contexts. Road wheels will run between $50-$2500 per wheel. So if you give a price range, we can reccommend some brands, and places to buy.

www.nashbar.com is reliable, and pretty inexpensive too... so you might want to start there. Otherwise, Id just say go to your LBS or REI if you have one nearby.

I rarely ride my bike so I was looking at the sale prixes that were around $60-100.  They were in the Performance Bike catalog which I think I just threw out by accident this morning so I don't remember the names!

Thanks everyone.  If I get a chance today I'll take the bike over to the LBS to see if it can get fixed.

You can definitely find a decent wheel for $60-100. If you rarely ride your bike, spending $60 sounds reasonable to me. I get something with 32 spokes at that price point, just so it is strong enough to stay true. Lower spoke count wheels, at a lower price point, may require more maintenance than you want to deal with.
