Here's the how of the shark fin drill...
Stretch your right arm out in front of you. Bend your left arm putting your hand on your hip. Swim on your right side with your left arm sticking out of the water like a shark's fin. Use a dolphin kick to propel yourself forward. Lift your head out of the water to breathe as needed.

This is a good kicking exercise that also helps your stomach muscles.

You can also use a flutter kick for propulsion. Don't forget to alternate from righ side to left side. Another shark fin drill is to keep your hand at your goggle with your elbow straight up, creating a shark fin.

The shark fin drill is very tough and I never liked doing it in swim team.

As you have already figured out, it is best to switch sides after each lap and not in the middle.

You know....[brainstorm] This drill would be alot more fun with fins...

Just curious - what is the purpose of the shark fin drill?  What are we working on?

I've been doing a version of this drill (I think) without the fin (arm flat against side).  The idea is promote swimming on your side along with overall good body position--keep head down against leading arm, breath by turning, not lifting the head.  After working on each side, I do lengths where I take 1 stroke and rotate to the other side.  Then do lengths where I take 3 strokes to switch sides.

I would guess using the "fin" focuses on bending your elbow to lift your arm out of the water.
