Ok, I know I am a little early here, but I just got the email from USAT that members get early registration for the event and it sounds like a lot of fun. I live in VA, but have family in NYC and would love to make a whole weekend of it.

So here's my question: Is this event really for the "elite"? I have only done one triathlon so far (the Sandman Sprint Tri in Va Beach 2 weeks ago) but would love to aspire to something more challenging. I just don't want to get in over my head, so to speak.

And, are wet suits allowed? It sounds like you might not need it swimming with the fast current.

Thanks for any input.

From what I've read, there is an Elite wave, but the event is by no means for the Elite only.  I would do a search of Race Reports and read about others' experiences.  Quite a few AGers  here have done it.

The NYC is open to anyone, but be aware it fills within hours of opening. The focus always seems to be on the elites for this race, but it is a destination race for a lot of people. I've never done it, but one day I will (it was supposed to be next season, but a friend is getting married the night before).

I'm in for 2008! (volunteered this year, so I got a guaranteed entry) Definitely a race for everyone, not just elites. Wetsuits are allowed, but you're right--due to the current, lots of people don't use 'em. (I probably will) I hear the bike is hilly in places, but the run is mostly flat. GREAT crowd support.

You've got 9 months to get ready for it--you'll do fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will try to remain as ignorant as possible about the quality of the Hudson, and go ahead and register when it opens. It sounds like a lot of fun!

It's funny though ... I live near DC and I feel the same way about the Potomac as many New Yorkers do about the Hudson. I had no interest in doing the Nations Triathlon because there is no way you'd get me to swim in the Potomac!

Ignorance is bliss.
