My brother-in-law, a lifetime swimmer, started doing tri's last year. We went for a four-mile run when I was visiting for Labor Day, and he killed me, and this was after a 60-minute bike ride! That convinced me to start running more. Now, after waffling for about a month or two, I finally committed to training for a triathlon last week. To see if I had the stamina to workout non-stop for an hour, I ran 7.5 miles in 60 minutes on Sunday, so I figured this thing would be a piece of cake. Just put in the time and the results follow, right?

Well, I went for my first swim workout on Wednesday morning, and I could barely make it 50 meters at a time! I did 10 of 'em, but my breathing and stroke broke down after about 35 - 40 meters. I have a lot of work to do there, but I am committed to it, so let's bring it on!

My first tri is a short one on March 13th. 300 meter swim, 13 mile bike and 3 mile run. I have no doubts about the bike and the run, but I am concerned about swimming 300 meters at once!

I have been a pretty serious golfer for the last eight or nine years, but for some crazy reason, I am going to give up a lot of time on the links to make myself tired most afternoons and some mornings. Ain't it great?!

Anyways, if anyone knows of a good swim coach in Houston/Sugar Land, I would love to hear it. I think I could use some instruction...

Phil

Don't worry about the swim, it'll come around. Just keep plugging and you'll be able to swim that distance in no time. And during the tri you can always breast stroke or side stroke for a while if you need to. Getting some instruction is a great idea. Swimming is by far the most technique oriented of the three sports. Good luck.

My toughest event will be swimming too - I am finding the book and video "total Imersion" very helpful. The "plug away" advice is good.

Get up with the University and see if they have a Master's team. They usually work with your skill level. Also call up the Y and the athletic groups in town. They can usualy lead you. ;-) ;-)

Couple of more ideas. You could check your local Community College to see if they have a class that fits your schedule. Get some instruction and 3 required workouts a week! Also check out the Total Immersion Swimming web site. There's a lot of good free info on technique and some downloadable video clips that are pretty helpful. Here's the link:

I was a horrible swimmer, and I'm still pretty bad, but the improvements I've made in a short period of time have even shocked me. After a couple of weeks you'll see a big difference if you leatn the basic and stick with it.
Best Wishes!

I am pretty sure it will work out. Heck, in three short workouts, I have increased my distance 50%! I was able to do 75M at once this morning, when all I had done previously was 50M...

If you search on previous threads you will see this common theme (myself included)! How can I run a half marathon but 50y swimming leaves me gasping :-) I have been doing the total immersion  book drills and am slowly improving. But after two weeks of swimming, I was able to swim 500y straight! A big key for me was to not gasp for air each time, but take normal breaths.
