Subject: Clyde wheels

And I thought buying a bike was hard...   My Bontragers have rim cracks so I need new wheels.  Ideally, would like to spend <$300 for training wheels, since I am looking at Hed 3s for racing wheels.  Want something that's giong to last.......

Looking at:

Neuvation M28 Aero 2 - lo spoke count but website says they're good for big guys

Building Shimano Ultegra/Mavic with 32 spokes - heavy, but supposed to be bombproof, about same price as Neuvations

Any other thoughts? Ideas?

try bikeisland.com and vuelta's, they are alos thru ebay

they have been stellar just as race wheels. So if you are looking at #$300 for training wheels, these will drop in nicely.

Ultegra 32h 3-cross with 14ga straight spokes. But, use Velocity aerohead rims. Come in a variety of colors and, in my 235lb experiences, much stronger than Mavics. I have a set of Dyads on my touring bike which will survive the nuclear age.

Some will say that 14/15/14 double butted spokes are stronger, but I've always used the straight spokes.

look into Mavic, I weigh way to much and they have held up for everything I have put them through..

I've pedaled my way down from 297lbs to 235. For a built up wheel Ultegra hubs with a Velocity Deep V 32h is BOMB PROOF and quiet aero actually. For a factory wheel set www.gvhbikes.com and get the Easton Circuits. I LOVE these wheels.

OK, I have been thinking about this: Building a set of Velocity Aeroheads, Ultegra hubs and 14ga straight spokes w/ brass nipples:

Rim=405gm/ea
Nipple=1gm/ea
Spokes = 295gm/32
Rear Hub = 349gm
Front Hub = 142gm

Therefore, a set of built wheels w/o skewers = 1955gm

Neuvations weigh 1740gm. 215gm = about 1/4 of a water bottle. You'll get the argument that rotational weight, blah, blah, blah......Jury is out here and you're asking for a clydesdale, so 210gm is insignificant compared to your body weight.

Also, Mavic Open Pro weighs 435gm, so technically, it's heavier and in my experience, less durable.

I've had such reliability from this configuration that I wouldn't train on anything else. I race cyclocross on them and have no issues. For daily use, I'd not use anything else

Thanks for the info.

As for weight, I could care (relatively) less.  200 grams in my wheels isn't where the problem is, it's the 25 pounds in my gut......

Looking at Neuvations simply because I hear that they are very good quality for the $$.

yeah but those grams are rotational and somehow really bad but I do agree your better off losing weight on you than losing weight in the wallet. remmeber you helps in the swim and really really helps on the run.
