Subject: Pool - salty / cloudy water?
What does it mean when the pool water is cloudy and tastes salty?

I'm assuming it means the pool isn't clean, but what specifically could cause this? And how can it be corrected?

(And no, I don't deliberately drink the pool water.)

It's the only gym around. So I don't have a lot of options.

Thanks!

Dee

LOL! I was wondering why you were sampling the pool water Is it possible that it is a bromine pool? If they use bromine, the water is basically like brine - salty and cloudy.

Yeah, see, that's like what I'm worried about. :P

But there aren't too many kids in there, usually. (They have kids lessons, but most of the people are adults.)

Still, it's icky.

Eh well, it gets in my mouth from time to time. Yuk.

So bromine does this? OK, I'll ask them about that tomorrow. If it's bromine, I'm ok with it.

The chart they post says chlorine: (temp, pH, chlorine). But they probably wouldn't write bromine because people would be less familar with it. So that could be a possibility.

I'm hoping it's bromine. Pee or sweat would be much more, um, icky.

Thanks!

You are fortunate if it is bromine, as it is much gentler on the skin than chlorine. You may also notice that your skin may feel a tad slimy after being in a bromine pool.

K so they have the temp too high for the chemicals they have in it. Cure is they need to up the chlorine, add a stabalizer if they dont have it in there, add a solution that binds with the growing algea stuff (if it is white cloudy the stuff is probly dead but not filtered) if its green and cloudy they need to shock it with double the base chlorine, maybe even add an algacide and then the blue stuff that binds with the small dead algea particles so that they will get taken out by the filter. Other option is their filter broke and hasnt been fixed so it isnt taking anything out of the water, etc.

Temp too high - Yeah, that could be an issue. They keep it around 88 degrees F.

Up the chlorine - They add a LOT already. I'll shower after swimming, and shower again the next morning, and I can STILL smell chlorine.

Stabilzer - Don't know if they're using that. Will ask.

Binder solution - Don't know if they're using it. But the water is white cloudy, not green cloudy.

Filter issues - That's possible. I don't know how often they clean it. Several times, there has been a smell to the water too. Can't describe it other than it wasn't "minty-fresh." The water is particularly cloudy/salty on those days. So maybe it's a filtration issue.

Where did you learn so much about pools and pool chemistry?

(Hey, I thought you were going bike shopping today?)

Thanks! Some good suggestions in your post. I'll have to ask about these (and also ask if they use bromine.)

I asked today about the pool. Here are the "official answers":

1. Yes, they use chlorine. (Not bromine.)

2. Other people have complained about the water being cloudy and salty too. It's tested twice a day, and "the pH and chlorine levels are ok."

3. The reason it's cloudy and salty is because:
a) "People don't shower before they swim."
b) T"he water is warm (88 F), so people sweat in the pool."

I'm not thrilled about the answers. I think it's a maintenance issue. I've swum in plenty of other indoor pools, and they weren't salty/cloudy.

Unfortunately, it's the ONLY pool around, so there's no other option. On the plus side, I'm not getting sick (yet) from swimming. So maybe it's not "too bad."

Thanks for the advice on the questions to ask!

88 F??? wow, that's really warm!

it sounds like the best advice is to try and ignore it - oh and maybe to drink less of it - LOL

They keep it at 88 F because they do physical therapy in it. Yes, it's disgustingly warm. Unfortunately, I am now USED to it. Which means anyplace else is cold in comparison.

I don't know, but the pool at my gym is like that sometimes.  I don't drink the water, but I can help but get water in my mouth when I'm swimming.  I have to wear a nose plug to keep the chlorine out of my sinuses.

It hasn't been that bad in a long while, thankfully.  The last time it was that bad was in the spring, and soon after the local swim lagoon opened up, so I didn't have to swim inside for a while.  Since I've had to switch back to the pool, it hasn't been like that.

If it's "icky" you should talk to the manager.

There is a local pool near me that has similar issues. I assumed it was because it was outdoors and had plenty of kids in it.

Disgusting? Yes. Safe? I hope so, and I am trusting in all the chlorine to do its job.

Bromine does not cause a pool to look cloudy/salty - and whoever made that statement above was incorrect.

from: http://www.wikihow.com/Diagnose-and-Clear-Cloudy-Swimming-Pool-Wate...

"Cloudy or dull pool water is caused by improper chemical balance or fine debris suspended in the pool water. "

Water is too warm and the breakdown of the chlorine used.  This comes from using chlorine bleach for thier source of chlorine- Sodium Hypochlorite.

It can break down to form NaCl-table salt. Water tastes salty.

Sodium Hypochlorite is commonly used for larger pools because it is easy to use and cheap.

Yeah, and it rips up the inside of my mouth.  After a long swim workout, I feel like I've been eating too many salty pretzels.

I saw the following on that page:

"Household bleach and pool chlorinator solutions are typically stabilized by a significant concentration of lye (caustic soda, NaOH) as part of the manufacturing reaction. Skin contact will produce caustic irritation or burns due to defatting and saponification of skin oils and destruction of tissue. The slippery feel of bleach on skin is due to this process."

Um. So basically, they are disinfecting the pool using Drano and Liquid Plumber. (Don't believe me? Check the bottles. The two main ingredients are sodium hydroxide (lye) and sodium hypochlorite (bleach).)

Yeah, bases, such as bleach, would be slippery on the skin.

Saponification is how they used to make soap. Animal fat + lye --> soap. So our skin provides the fat, and the pool provides the lye.

Delightful...... Especially since I swam 28,900 yards in there last month.
