It's bonkers, but it's a good idea.

Depends on where you are at, and what you feel you can do.

Can you train to the level where you can finish it? Yes.

Will you be able to train to the point where you can go under 5 hours? Not likely.

It's my second season next year, and I'm planning at least one 1/2 IM, and a Marathon in October.

I'm toying with this idea myself. I know I could if I train correctly. The only thing I'm not sure of is can I get in the volume required. Realistically, what kind of time commitment would I be looking at during the highest volume weeks?

My highest volume (time wise) while training for a 1/2IM was 15hrs.

It all depends...obviously if you want to put up a decent time then that would require more training, but if you just want to basically finish, then significantly less.

I did my half in my second tri year. In that second year though I did two olys, a sprint, and a couple long road races to get me primed for the half ironman. It's definitely doable. However, I'd add that there's a HUGE difference between doing an oly and half ironman.

I'd advocate building to a 15-17 mile long run, 60+ long bike and 5000 yds in the pool a week.

Sure! I'm gonna do one my second season.

PGoldberger is correct - if you are thinking about it, you're gonna do it

Yes, it is very doable! It will take a plan and commitment (perhaps in a mental institution but commitment no less ).  I did just that and used BT's 1/2 iron plan. You do have to plan out your year, perhaps using the triathlon training bible . A good mix of races is needed before in order for you and your body to gain'experience'. I wouldn't and didn;t expect miracles, I just wanted to finish as a general goal but did have a reasonable expectation of time.
Good luck and stay healthy!  Go for it!

I looked at the Oly/Sprint training plan I've been putting together for next year and the Half IM plan here on BT and the training volumes are almost identical (the Training Bible has 400 hours as a minimum for training for an Oly). So, I was planning on putting in the time anyway. So, it looks like I'll be registering for the Musselman Half IM! Thanks everyone.

Now, excuse me while I go get my head checked.

I'm almost done with my 1st full year of triathlon.  I have signed up for 1/2 Vineman on 7/31/04.  I'm nervous already, but can't wait to do it!  (FULL IM in 2006!).

You probably have not read my depressing post, but even though this is not my second season (its my fourth), I have only ever done sprint distance tris. I decided that seeing as swimming was my worst leg why on earth would I do an olympic distance with all that swimming if I was only going to do a piddly 40K bike 10K run? (sorry not meaning to belittle the excellent oly competitors - it is just for me to swim 1500m vs 1900m is about the same as flying TO the moon vs flying AROUND the moon - get what I mean?!) The BT program was what I used and found that once we started getting longer days it was a piece of cake to work in the required training and yes I work full time plus am sole parent to two teenage (junior high) boys. I would do two a day sessions and save as much long stuff for the weekends as I could. Making sure you have family support is half the battle so if that is an issue for you really spend some good ground work now getting everyone enthusiastic about your goal. Make it like a holiday by booking nice accommodation. Of course you can do it as long as you don't aim for anything more than finishing before the cutoff so it is enjoyable and you don't take yourself too seriously! Look forward to hearing about your training! Deidre

I'm in the same boat. I want to do a 1/2 IM but it's a daunting task. Next summer will be my "seond season". I had to cut this last one short due to personal reasons. Could anyone point me in the right direction on where to get started? I feel a little lost. Also, should I subscribe to the self dare method of entering now and letting ego and pride take me through training (it's how I did my first one!!) I'd appreciate any feedback. Race and train well!

i understand your uncertainty. i am only getting started and have no seasons under my belt and am considering building to a 1/2 in Sep 2005. I wouldn't consider my self "a couch" starter, being comfortable with swimming and having a some running experience, but no bike miles.... I think aiming for the 1/2 will only improve my training and performance at spring/summer sprints/oly's. So, I wonder if that makes us both "bonkers" (likely me more bonkers than you) Cheers and Good luck!

I did a 1/2 IM my first season, altho I started with a good base.  I had only done one Oly prior to that.  I actually ran 15.5 miles instead of 13.1 (long story, it's in my race report) but even with the extra mileage I finished in 6:38 or something like that.  (Pathetic that I can't remember!)

I WILL be under 6 for Spirit of Racine if it kills me tho!  Under 5 isn't something I'm ready to even consider.

I'm in your position ginger ninja. I think I have decided to prep with a couple olys in 2005 (one spring and mid summer) then make my A event a 1/2 IM in the late summer. That should leave plenty of time to comfortably build up and be prepared. I'm like you, if I do it, I'm going for a sub 5 hr time. Just can't help myself.

I'm going for a 1/2 on me second season. I don't care if I'm slow (lie), I have to do it. Then, a full Ironman in 2006.
Triathlon has changed my life.

Thanks everyone for getting me through my first season. Although I didn't post alot, you all really helped!!! I feel like I'm not alone.

Well,

if you're thinking about it then it's already done. I couldn't believe how blistering fast I went from thinking about doing a 1/2IM to finding a race in Colorado and a training plan. By then I was hooked. Plus I told other Colorado BTers so that means I HAVE to do it! Anyway, I started the Oly training plan in October and the 1/2IM is almost the same so I figure that by March I should be ready for my Oly and I can build up enough base to end the season in September I should be ready to do 1/2IM. Unlike you sub 5-hour folks I just want to finish so by my calculations I should finish in 8 hours.

So go do it!

Train, Prepare, Believe!

I hope it's not Bonkers. I haven't done any tri's yet and I signed up for a half in June.

I just started biking and swimming in July but I've been a distance runner for years.

Well I guess I'll find out come June.
