Having said all of that, the schadenfreude of Notre Dame's implosion is almost too much pleasure for me to handle.

Excellent....I had to go look that up.

heh, yeah sometimes there is a word that is just so perfect that the translation seems to dilute its effectiveness somehow:

Main Entry: scha·den·freu·de Pronunciation: \'shä-d?n-?fro?i-d?\ Function: noun Usage: often capitalized Etymology: German, from Schaden damage + Freude joy Date: 1895

: enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others

i.e. Scotto experienced schadenfreude as the Fightin Irish offense flailed about

Purdue's season is already a success by beating ND.

I just wish someone would tell my Boilermakers that the football season lasts beyond September...

Mark

Amen Bro -> Just tell Morgan Burke to keep scheduling MAC teams all the way into November. Hell let's just join the MAC and get it over with...

Well at least this BCS list confirms one thing -> The Big Ten is definitely having a down year.

A down year?  I personally think the Big Ten is ALWAYS the most overrated conference.  They have 1-2 good teams (if that) and a bunch of mediocre.  In most years, I would list them as the fourth or fifth best conference.

As a Purdue grad, I would have to admit that the Big Ten hasn't been too special since the mid 70's.  Back in those days before scholarship limits, Michigan and Ohio State would load up on most of the midwest talent and had some great teams.

Both my kids graduated from Florida and I spent the past seven years attending games at the Swamp.  The team speed and the athleticism at every position in the SEC is amazing.

One ironic observation, I graduated from Ft. Wayne Snider HS, which has been a traditional Indiana football power and produced several NFL players, most notably Hall of Famer Rod Woodson.  When I was in HS in '69-'71, the SEC regularly recruited in Indiana.  We had a couple of guys from my class that went to UF to play.  These days with all the HS football talent in the state of Florida, Urban Meyer probably wouldn't be able to find Indiana on a US map unless it was for Notre Dame.

I agree the Big 10 is probably the most over-rated conference over the last decade especially when you look at TV exposure and Big-$ Bowl tie-ins vs. actual quality of the teams.

Doesn't change the fact that the Big 10 is having a down year. As evidence I present the BCS standings, with the Big 10 only have 2 teams in the top #25 (and one of those at #25), where in most years they will have 4 or 5 teams in that same list.

Funny you made this statement.   I looked at Florida's 2007 commitment list and found a 4-star DB from Indianapolis, IN.   Florida's program does have national appeal...though I agree the talent in Florida (and south in general) is really deep.

Heck, I'd give A State a number 1 vote before I'd give it to LSU immediately following a loss to an unranked opponent.

bts

Good thing someone as uninformed as you doesn't get a vote. Kentucky was 17th when they beat LSU.

Aww, it sounds like someone's a wittle bittew that their supposedly all-world team that sports talk types were hying as a shoo-in for the title game couldn't handle their business when the chips were down.

Not at all. Kentucky took it to LSU, especially in the 4th quarter, physically whupped them, and deserved the win. That's life in the SEC. With any luck ythe two teams will meet again at the end of the year in Atlanta. I'd rather play them again than Florida.

What I take exception to is someone espousing an uninformed opinion demonstrating his ignorance of the topic. But I guess that's par for the course for one who rarely has something original to add to these boards and spends the bulk of his time and posts sniping at others.

Wow, yeah.  You've got me pegged.  I didn't see the rankings of Kentucky on a score when I mentioned Arizona State could be ranked over LSU so I'm spouting off with one of my endless unoriginal, uninformed opinions.

Way to turn a light-hearted sports discussion into a rather nasty personal attack.  If that's what you gotta do to feel all big and manly, have at it.  I'd say it's sad if it weren't so pathetic.  I'm sure in your 13K+ posts you've been nothing but a the picture of hospitality and originality.  I'll strive to live up to the lofty example you've set.

Now hurry along, I'm sure there's someone else dying to hear about how they should "ride lots".

I just want to say the rise of USF has been fun to watch.

On the other hand it is bad for florida (the state not university of florida).

Three new schools USF, Florida international, Florida atlantic  Starting their programs in the last ten years.  Want happens is a watering down of the talent pool at the majors, UF, FSU, UM.  You can really see the effect in FSU, UM.  I am not saying that as a whole the small florida schools can compete for every blue chip recruit but the constantly snipe 2 or 3 players a year that would have maybe previously attended a major florida school.  The kids that want to stay in the home town or play immediatly instead of waiting a year or two to earn a spot.  These players add up over a couple of years and it means trouble for the big 3.

there are plenty of college football fans who would say that is a good thing....

although bad for TV nationally... a BCS championship game of South Florida vs. Boston College probably wouldn't draw the audience that two big name schools would, but it is interesting, for a year. I think this year is an anamoly.

So there's a scoring system now?  Sure, whatever you say, Johnny, yer the beloved Resident Curmudgeon, I'm surely remiss for daring to hold you in anything but the highest regard.  And, I didn't ask for, nor am I interested in, any of your advice, recycled or otherwise.  But don't you worry, I'm sure there's someone just dying to hear it again.

Lack of the understanding of the topic? The topic is Pac-10 vs. SEC football. Here's a recap: I made the unforgiveable mistake of failing to note Kentucky's rank in the their game with LSU. You insulted me. I said you sure were sounding grumpy, a persona you go out of your way to live up to. Then you went the way of the whiny 6-year-old and insulted my intelligence and character having never met me. And then, most would agree, it was all pretty downhill from there.

So, one more time: not interested in the least on your opinion on what I should be doing in any aspect of my life, if it was genocide in Armenia, or whether or not I should get a road bike/tri bike/or both. If I was I could go use the search and find it repeated hundreds of times.

Tell ya what, I'm done wasting my time with you. But, if it'll make you feel better, fire away. I'll let you have the last word, do what ya gotta do.
