Subject: Ear pain when swimming
Hi!

I don't know if someone can help me but here's my problem. I've been swimming for a few months now... and never had any problems. But since I came back from my trip in Hawaii (I had two 10 hours flights) well my ears hurt when I'm swimming and my sine are very congested after my training and still the day after. So.. I don't know if it's because I'm coming up with a cold or if it's caused by my flights... Thanks for your help!

Not a Doctor, but love pretending I am.   I assume you did not have this prob before.  Maybe stating the obvious, but you might wanna try earplugs.  That helped me a lot, just alleviating the discomfort of water on the ear and the "pain" of trying to shake it out - (that usually gave me a headache).

I sometimes have some sinus congestion after swimming, just chalk it up to the chemicals.

This was very helpful, huh?????  Now I know why I have no patients (or patience for that matter).

I get the same symptoms when the pool water at my club starts to get funky. I don't know if this is the cause but something else to think about.

I have somewhat the same problem - Swimmer's Ear.  Water gets in my ear and won't drain out.  Don't know that you have swimmer's ear, but you may have had water trapped  in your ear all along and it never really gave you a problem; until your flights may have caused some inflamation, and with the water in there it caused swelling, or even a minor infection (not to worry - pretty unlikely - probably just some swelling due to the irratation)

IMHO, using Swim Ear will probably eliveate the problem.  I can't stand ear plugs, which is what my Dr. recommended, but he said the better alternative is Swim Ear anyway.  They are drops you can buy at any drug store or grocery store OTC.  They work great!!!! :-)  Just a few drops in each ear immediately after getting out of the pool, and I have not had a problem in years.

How can you swim and turn your head properly without getting a huge earful of water?!  I can't imagine being able to deal without earplugs!

you have to figure...once your ears are full of water, its just like wearing plugs. i used to never be able to swim without plugs until i forgot them one day. now it doesnt even phase me.

I use Swim Ear after every workout and have not had a problem since I started doing that. When I did get inflamed sudafed and motrin cleared it up in a couple of days.

I love this site. I can find anything I need right here.

Thanks, SwmBkRn and piggpen35. I am going to buy some Swim Ear at lunch today.

My doctor also gave me some Allegra to help with drying out the sinuses. it's all related, as I also had fluid in my ear which would not drain.

I recently learned that some rubbing alcohol dripped from a Q-tip in the ear will help get an extra water out. Works like a dream for me!
