For those of you that find it tough to get outside in the winter to train, I would like to invite you to season two of the crummy weather challenge.  I will have to dig for the point system, but it makes training in crap a good thing!  Yay!  Holla if you are interested and look for this to start up in Nov.

Yeah, I might be interested. I live in Michigan, and there's nothing better than getting out when it's raining, snowing, hailing, blowing wing, and sh**ing all at the same time.

Only downside is this whole global warming thing. It's late October and still 70 degrees out. Only thing I can hope for is a good tornado to run in.

Ok, I searched for the suckitude formula for tracking and multipliers to calculate suckage.  I will have to find the spreadsheet morey1 made for it, but here is the gist:

The formula and multipliers are as follows:

Temperature Wind factor

30-35 .5 point light winds (5-10 mph) 1 point
25-29 1 points 11-19 mph- 2 points
15-24 3 points 20+- 4 points
1-14 5 points
0 and below 8 points

Precip

drizzle/light snow 1 point
heavy rain/snow 3 points

Bike multiplier

1 point to multiplier to any bike minutes sub 50 degrees

Suck-o-meter scoring
Time in minutes x (Temp mult+Wind mult+precip mult+ Bike mult)= Suckitude score

Yep, I'm out of this one since I'm in southern Cali as well. I was actually just looking at the forecast for the next week and just about passed out when I saw this:

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 97.
Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 98.
Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 93.

That just seems so so very wrong for the week before Halloween!

I feel sorry for you cali folks cuz running on fresh snow on a crisp January morning with a full moon out in the sticks is truly amazing.  Same with trail running in the fall.  I will run in anything but throw this out there cuz some folks dont share that bliss.

I remember those days well. I grew up in very rural Tennessee and ran year round, so I've had to lovely experience of running in sleet, snow, etc. That's why I now live in Cali.

Sounds really great, but we don't get weather like that until January or February here in Northern Virginia.

As much as I'd like to do this one, I think I'm going to have to pass. I'm completely overwhelmed with school this semester and next isn't looking any better.

It is the duration of the winter so feel free to drop in and out.  We would start a weekly thread and folks could commiserate/brag about their craptastic workouts.  Some doozies fo sho in the Jan/Feb months.  Who woulda thought running in a blizzard could be so fun!

hmm, here in central VA we've had maybe 2 inches of snow in the past 3 years COMBINED.  Cold-depends on the mindset of the person who is out there running or riding.  What's cold to someone with little/no body fat isn't cold to the Pillsbury dough boys of the world.  I'm out, need to be farther north to get the suckoneter scale going but that sounds like a BLAST

Hey! Maybe you can also make temperature adjustments for our tropical friends (e.g., S. Cal. or S. Texas, etc.). Obviously, they have rain and wind in those places, but you could also have points scored for running in high temperature. Running in 90 degree weather is just as bad (if not worse) than running in zero degree weather. As for the wind, those guys living in tornado alley can score huge points for running in 130 mph winds!

I'm so in for this! I was just wondering to myself last monday whether this would get resurrected as I was running in some pretty crappy fall weather - 45F, drizzle/rain, and 25mph winds. I relish the idea that there are a LOT of people thinking, "who the @#$& is that crazy ba$tard running in this garbage" mostly because I used to be one of those people. Now I be all hard core and stuff.

yes yes Y-E-S, i'm so in!  i'm actually looking forward to crappy weather now

does the temperature include the wind chill or does the wind speed factor that in?

Can I do it if I only plan an outside run once (maybe twice) a week? Or maybe I can just pop in to give my suckatude score on occassion? (also I am going to Florida for a week so that would sort of demolish any suckatude factors unless a hurricane hit).

I am SO happy we are doing this again. Sunday when I left for my run it was 28 degrees and at least a 30 mph wind and I was thinking...damn, I wish we were in the crummy weather challenge again

I have an unfair northern state advantage and I live in one of the windiest places on earth so bring it on!

looking forward to it.

I dunno, I think if you can drink a post workout mai tai in it, its not crummy weather   If someone wants to whip up an acceptable formula for anything south of 85 or 90, go for it.
