Subject: High HR at the start of a run
Today was a long run 2:30 feel free to read my log.  I did my normal pre race routine 1.5 cups coffee, peanut butter and honey on whole wheat bread, 2 cups of water and a GU.  I started the run and my HR went to 155 then 160 then 168 it topped out at 170 I did not feel anything odd but took a 1 min walk break at the 4 min mark and after that it was a normal run ave HR for 2.5 hours 135.  Anyone have any ideas why this may happen I have experenced this in the past but never had any bad effects.

What type of warm up do you do? This normally happens to me during my warmup when my heart races to catch up with the increase level of exertion. Then, after a little stretching, and into my "set", it eases and goes normal. Please notice that I have never run anywhere's NEAR as long as you have.

Okay - probably not the best way to start your workout. A warmup will allow you to get a more a steady read on your HR when you start your workout.

I see no value in a "warm up" for a 2.5 hour run. This is an easy, slow run. I agree that this is just your bodys normal response to catching up with the increased demand. My HR is always higher the first 3 to 5 minutes of my LSD runs.
