I recommend spending a couple hundred on the BEST FIT you can find, then go buy a bike that fits the parameters your fitter suggests. Having a pile of money to start is not the most important thing. FWIW, I built up a $10K bike last winter using Ebay and other resources. I started with a new Litespeed Blade frame that I bought for only $1200.00 and a ful Dura Ace kit from a demo bike for $700.00

Good luck

On a serious note, I agree that if you have $4,000 to spend, get a $2,500 bike then purchase a power meter.  I bought the Specialized but I'm also getting a PowerTap and an aero helmet. It's off season and I've also got time to work on the engine  Good luck!

Kinda confused. Most people are saying to get a $2,500 dollar bike and get a power tap with the rest. But according to several threads here a powertap and associated wheel runs about $2k. That makes $4,500. So is a powertap $1,500 or $2,000? Thanks.

Just go into the bike store with $100 bills pinned all over your jersey and say you want to ride every bike.  Buy the one that turns you on the most.  I've got a bunch of bikes in your price range.  I do not have a Power Tap and have no plans to buy one.  My bikes make me very happy.  There is nothing quite like standing up and accelerating on a bike.  Under your own power, you can go from a standstill to 25 mph.  That is a great feeling.   Buy a bike that feels like that.

I got my powertap for $1000 less 20% coupon at Performance Bike plus a credit of 10% towards another purchase so net cost was $720 with heavy training wheel.

Now if you want to get Zipp 404s as your power tap wheel they are considerably more money.

What does one need to do to properly utilize a powermeter thing? Personally, I have limited time to train, much less muck around with stuff. I am afraid if I add a powermeter, I won't have time to actually USE it. What's the learning curve, and what do I need to do make sure I don't throw out $1k?

I have had the same conundrum - I have the same budget, and have struggled with the same questions. My concern, and this may apply to the OP, so I will bring it up here, is that I could spend $4k on a bike, but due to my limited ability, I'll be like the ski bunny that skiers hate - they have the $2k North Face one-piece, $2k skis, but couldn't carve a turn with carving knife. I'm not terribly worried about what other people think, but I also don't want to buy something that I will never truly fully utilize, you know?
