Subject: Cervelo P2C D/A vs Ultegra - opinions please
Looking to get a P2C this winter for next season. And yes, only if it fits me. A FIST session will be the first thing I buy.
Which model would be the better deal?

The difference between the two is $500. For that $500, the component difference is, based on retail prices
Front derailleur (d/a vs ult) ~ $50
Rear derailleur (d/a vs ult) ~ $60
Crank set (slk light vs slk) ~ $50
Fork (Wolf CL vs Wolf TT) ~ ?? Unknown, if anyone knows please post
Wheels (shimano R-550 vs shimano R-500) ~ ?? Unknown, if anyone knows please post

Which components of the D/A model would be great upgrade over the Ult model?
Which ones not important? I'm already thinking that the wheels would not be a good upgrade since I would be looking at race wheels in the near future.

I'm thinking at this point, I could order the Ult model and upgrade the derailleurs, crank, and possibly the
fork. Keep the cheaper wheels since these would be just for training. Or do the opposite and get the
D/A model and downgrade the wheels and or fork. This of course depends on what the LBS would allow me to do.
In conversations with them earlier, they lead me to believe this would be acceptable.

Thoughts?

Personally, I would get the Ultegra bike and leave it alone.

I am planning on going with the Ultegra.  I've heard the quality of the Ultegra has increased in the past few years and there is less of a difference in performance between Ultegra and DA.  There's a pretty big price difference between the two bikes and I don't really think the DA is worth the extra money.

I think I would go Ultegra and spend the $$ on wheels. I was looking to upgrade from Ult to DA and I had to ask myself why. I couldn't come up with a valid reason other than the crankset looks really cool!! My rear derailleur is DA but the rest of the bike is Ultegra. Never had a problem with it for 3 years now.

There was an article in Triathlete a couple of months ago that answered a similar question. The conclusion to the article was, "no one ever lost a race because they were on Ultegra and not Dura-ace."

As I understand it, the differences between the two are mostly in their weight, and, unless you're an elite racing Ironmans, I doubt that the few hundred grams would make a significant difference to you. I say save the $500 and spend it on something else.

X2. Both of my main bikes are Ultegra. I have hearad that DA uses lighter materials. but to the detriment of durability.

If you buy the high end stuff now you won't have upgrade eyetis and wind up spending more in the long run. I had the 550 on my cervelo and think they aren't worth a hoot but after a few rides I put my hed3s on for good and love the bike. Get the race wheels now.

Definitely true of DA chains. I would say the other DA components are not compromised though...but spending $500 to save a few grams...thats a decision you have to make yourself. I will say with the utmost certainty though, the Ultegra bike will function just as well as the DA bike.

My riding partner back in MA got a Giant TCR with DA rear der - he snapped the hanger climbing hills his first month of riding. Downgraded to Ultegra and hasn't had an issue. Other than pinch-flatting with tires at 60psi... I scolded him severely for that. He rides at 100psi now...

The hanger isnt a Shimano part though.. the actual hanger is a Giant part.

There is really no benefit to DA except looks and the couple grams of weight savings.

Hanger is the wrong word then - I wish I had my maintenance book...he broke the part that says Ultegra on it... I can't remember the name. It was a Shimano part, I am certain.
