I guess the moral of the story is get your runs in but walking extras miles is always a good bonus.

There ya go!   Nothing says you can't run 4 miles and then do a 1-2 mile walk as a cool down either.  Then you know you've burned more calories.

Really though, people are having a hard time seeing what your confusion was all about in the first place. Running kills 2 birds with one stone.  It prepares you for running and also burns the calories you need to lose for your weight loss.

interesting that about 1/4 people think walking is better and 3/4 says run.

Runner is the clear winner here.

Is it your intention to actually FINISH IMKY?

Congratulation! You've wasted nearly two days trying to figure out what you probably already knew. Did you run yesterday or were you waiting the results of this poll?

I don't want to be cynical but if you're going to finish IMKY you're gonna need to stop this senseless BS and TRAIN. Stop worrying about what other people think you should be doing and start doing what you know you should be doing.

It's an online calculator, so it's making some assumptions.

Here's my thoughts on what you should do:

Go out and train for your race. If weight loss is really key for you right now, then you need to find a nutritionist who can help you with your diet. You're worried about detail stuff, and missing the forest for the trees. I think that by training to run a marathon, swim 2.4 miles, and bike 112 miles, you're gonna lose weight.

Get your head in the game, get your bike fixed, and start running.

amen! but something tells me next week we'll have another entertaining thread from Chi.

I agree, he has had some 'hum-dingers' recently

I really hope that Todd is just having fun by yanking everyone's chains with all these threads.  I think he's sitting there at work, having a good laugh at our expense.

And if he's not, I wish him Godspeed in finishing IMKY.

Nope... He took the day off for his b-day and hang with his sis.

the bear - 2007-11-01 2:17 PM Where are you getting your calculations/assumptions from? I have always heard that you burn the same amount of calories per mile whther you're running or walking. Thus walking 5 miles would burn more calories than running 4 miles...

I haven't heard this. I always thought you burned more calories running.

I would go with secret option #3. Go 5 miles, but run as much of it as possible. For fat loss, intervals are better. Try to do a 2:1 ratio. For instance, run 30 seconds, walk 60 seconds. You should be running hard - a near sprint. This might not be the best way to build an aerobic base but it is good for fat loss.

I wouldnt start doing intervals... no way.. it doesnt sound like you have the running volume to start doing intervals.

I run 4 walk 2..like others said... and slowly start upping this.

I said walk simply for the lack of impact on the joints for weight loss. If you're trying to do and IM you need to run so you can complete the IM.

Essentially if you're trying to lose weight and train for a triathlon, you really should be doing them both to some extent. I think you should be focusing on the IMKY and less on the weight loss. If you train and eat the way you should, you will end up being happy with the results you see on the scale. If you focus on weight loss primarily and then on IMKY, it's going to be harder to cross the finish line.

Just get out there and do it. You can do it. You will do it. Just focus on finishing the race and staying healthy.

"trainee's experience" vs. "need for training complexity." .

It's so true in cycling.
