Yep, I'm near Columbus. I started training Sept 07, hoping to make the Chicago Danskin sprint event in Sept 08, or when-ever it is. I may also attempt a sprint event near my hometown in WI in July, depending on how training goes. I'm starting from absolute zero on activity level. Progress is really slow on the running front, but swimming and biking are coming along.

I'm in Cardington, Ohio. I'm planning on doing the Wendy's challenge in 08 as well as running the Columbus Marathon. I have been swimming everday during the week at lunch and running in the evenings and weekends. I am very excited about doing tri's. I will be 40 in 2009 and I am in the best shape of my life.

I am not that far from Columbus, about 45 minutes west.

2008 will be my third season.  There are a LOT of races in the central Ohio area.  What tris are you thinking about for 2008?

Wendy's is a tough race, I have heard some not so good things about it.  You might even check the RR (Race Reports) for the Wendy's races.

That is a link to all the race reports for the past 2 years.

I'm another CMHer that is focued on the Wendy's sprint as my first tri (in about 20 years). Goal is to get off the couch, lose enough weight so as not to get hurt (go from 265lbs to 235lbs) which has occured the last 4 months, then start training in December (and atempt to go from 235lbs to 215lbs).

I live in train in the Gahanna/New Albany area. '08 will be my third tri season and I plan on doing a lot more races. I am still debating on taking on a HIM this season and haven't made the final decision.

Wendy's International is a Sprint race that is on the long side of things. The swim is very close to a 1/2 mile or about 700-800 yrds and the bike is just under 18 miles. The run is the standard 5km. I have done the race twice 2005 & 2007 and will be their again in '08.

Check out fatrabbitracing.com and hfpracing.com. Both companies run a lot of races across Ohio and are very well run.

Best of luck everyone on your training. If anyone is up for a training ride, run or OWS feel free to PM when the weather changes. Keep in touch

I was all set to sign up for the Miami tri (that's the indoor pool one , yes? Sounded good), then I got the ticketmaster alert. Riverdance is at the Palace that same weekend.

Stop laughing at me! It's their last tour! My daughter asked very nicely to go. Seeing as how this would also be my very first tri, I decided I wanted a weekend absolutely clear. So, no Miami for me this year.

I'm keeping my eye on either doing the Tri for Joe, Coney Island, or the women's one at Alum Creek in June as my first.

Doing Miami for the first time this year. This is the first year it fits into my schedule. Coney Island is nice but water is very cold. Plan on a wetsuit.

I live in columbus and am trying to pick a race. I am thinking Deer creek , tri for Joe or Ceaser creek. Any advice which would be best for a newbie?

Tri for Joes is a pool swim but cold, little easier so you don't have to worry about open water swim for your first event.

Thanks for the tip.
Is it really better to swim indoors rather than outdoors?
What makes it better.
I am afraid of colliding into too many people in the pool.

Tri for Joes is an outside pool, not an indoor pool. It's a pretty big pool. I was able to stay clear for the most part.

Swimming in an open body of water for a race such as Deer Creek if it's your first time can be a little intimadating.  Not sure what happens but it's not the same as swimming in a pool. To me I feel like I am was hyperventalating. I try and relax but by them your spent. If Deer Creek or Ceaser Creek is your first make sure you try a couple OWS before the race.

The Tri for Joe & Coney Island is in their wave pool... with the waves turned off of course. It is usually pretty cold from the people that I have spoken with. The temp is usually in the low to mid 60s. They usually have just filled the pool for the season by May and doesn't have the temps nor the time to warm it up.

I usually open my season with Wendy's International put on by Ultrafit at Alum Creek. Since it is a corporate challenge event I can do it for free thanks to the company I work for picking up the bill. This year it is June 8... a little earlier than last year. The swim is along the beach at Alum Creek and you can basically touch the bottom at all times. This is a great beginners tri for that very fact. You will see a lot of people stop to catch their breath or even walk for a little bit. All starts are in waves and are all wade starts. The water temperature is usually in the mid to low 70s and I have been completely comfortable swimming it without a wetsuit the two times I have done the race.

Alum Creek is probably one of the best places for you to train for an OWS. Most weekends and week days the beach is open. You can swim right against the shoreline and one length is near a half mile. Another option is training with COTT... they swim at the quary in Grandview. This is illegal so it is at your own risk.

My plans for the year:
Jun 8 - Wendy's International - Sprint
Jul 20- Columbus International - Olympic
Aug 24 - Great Buckeye Challenge - HIM
Sep 7 - Portage Lakes - Olympic

If anyone is interested I am up to try to get together for a ride once the weather turns around. Best of luck in the New Year and your training.

thanks so much for the good information. A wave pool sounds good. Everything I read seems to discourage an open water swim for the 1st Tri. I just need to make sure that I can be ready by May I appreciate all the tips.

My first tri was OW and I really did not have much of an issue, but different strokes for different folks I guess rings true. Another good experience for your first OW is the Columbus International. It takes place in Antrium Park in Worthington on 7/20 this year. It is a time trial start where they start people off every 3 seconds. It is enough of a gap that you aren't being swum over right as you start. Plus you get to race down 315 between Worthington and Henderson on your bike which is a pretty neat experience. It is a really flat and fast course all around.

Tri for Joe is a great beginner race.  The pool is cold, last 2 years it was around 66-68 degrees at the start of the race.  Not so cold that you will have major problems, but chilly enough that you don't want to linger in the water.

The bike course down there is pretty good, long for most tri's around 17-18 miles, but it is pretty flat.

The run is all inside the park at Coney Island, again flat.

It really is designed for a beginner, very friendly, lots of help and people all along the bike route cheering you on.  They have pep bands playing for you during the run.  Fairly early start, so I have generally tried to stay in the area.

It is a wave start, but the waves are fairly small.  Normally no more than 30 or so to a wave.  That makes it a LOT better than many wave starts on the beachs.  Those will have 50-80-100 or more to a wave.  You can get pretty beat up in the washing machine.

Hi, there. I'm considering doing the Chicago Danskin, too. A friend of mine has done it in the past and loved it. However, as you've probably already found, there are so many tris in Ohio my interest in the Danskin race has weakened. There is a women's only, half the distance of a sprint in Akron, but it's in September and I can't wait that long!

I'll probably end up shooting for the Tri for Joe in May as my first one. Best of luck with your training!

Yeah, I decided against the Danskin one too. It sounded very positive, but also very, very crowded.

I think I'm going to do the Triathlon for the Cure, 28 June, as my first one.
http://www.fatrabbitracing.com/Events/Tri4Cure/Triathlon4Cure.aspx

The distances are shorter so I'm confident I'll make the time cut-offs. I'm going to do a couple 5k's in the spring to warm-up. The running is the part I'm most concerned about so I need to prove to myself that I can make it to the end.

Besides, I just can't see me in a wetsuit for Tri-for-Joe. Even if I got into it, I'm certain I'd have a complete "Slow, Fat, Triathlete" moment, and get stuck coming out.

Newbie here! I did a duathlon last October, and am now training for my first tri at age 47. That is if I don't kill myself with the swimming part. I have never been much of a swimmer (or a runner or a biker for that matter). However, I was very surprised at how little I could swim once I started. I have come a long way, but still have a long way to go.

I am registered for the one at Miami and can't wait. Just gotta get the swim down and I will be okay! If all goes well, I would like to do a couple more this year.
