Hello everyone!  I'm in Delware, OH and I will be doing the sprint tri in Miami in April 09.  I'm pretty excited!  I come from a strong swimming background.  I know nothing about bikes and almost fell off the road bike when I went to test drive a few.  What does everyone ride here?

k_watzek - 2008-11-08 8:39 PM Hello everyone!  I'm in Delware, OH and I will be doing the sprint tri in Miami in April 09.  I'm pretty excited!  I come from a strong swimming background.  I know nothing about bikes and almost fell off the road bike when I went to test drive a few.  What does everyone ride here?

I'm also signed up (haven't registered yet) for the MU tri.  I did 2 at lakes this last/first season, and I'm really looking forward to swimming indoors in a heated pool, especially one that's 50 meters!

I'm currently shopping for a road bike myself.  I'm riding on a friend's dept. store bike and it's killing me!  I'm looking at a Giant OCR 3 at Roll (Easton, Polaris) and am recently considering a Specialized at Bike Source.  I'm looking at spending as little money as possible at this point, though, so I'm sure others could recommend higher-end bikes if you're interested.  If you do a search for "bike help" or "what kind of road bike" under the Forums, you'll pull up a lot of great info.

Be sure to include this race into your Training Log.  There are 6 of us signed up right now.  If you have any questions about how to do that, feel free to PM me.  Oh, and, welcome to BT!

The Pool at Miami is awesome, though the comment about it being heated means you are mistaken-  Those fast college kids do like swimming in bath water and this pool takes care of their needs.  The real shock to the system is once you step out of the building and experience an April morning in Ohio while wet.

Bike course is hilly and is out and back, run course is flat around the dorms.

I would expect the Miami pool to be around 75-70ish degrees- heated but still cool.  The Powell YMCA pool is at 80 and it's a might bit warm for my tastes.

I'm quite excited- I just found out I get to swim @ one of the 50m pools at Ft. Bragg the first week of Dec- what a way to burn off the thanksgiving turkey!

for those looking to do miami, it is an AWESOME race.

I did it as my first triathlon ever three years ago (in its first year as a race), and had a blast. came back this year and placed 2nd overall (far cry from that first day struggling to finish the swim and walking part of the run).

The pool is indeed heated, and is fairly warm for a pool used for racing. for the tri this year it was 77 or 8 if i remember correctly. it can be a shock running outside from the warm inside, first time around was bad, this year was not too cold, maybe 55 outside so no need to put clothes on after the swim.

bike is a rolling loop now, with the first mile or two, and the last mile sharing the same section. the run is DEAD flat, through campus and is an hour and back (but you can see most of the course the whole time and its easy to know where you are. water stop right around mile 1.
fantastically run race and its growing every year (first year was like 260 registered, this year over 600).

if you want an early season race, look to this one, you wont be disapointed.
