  • ...I'll probably freeze one water bottle for my bike that I plan on using later in the bike ride, that will help me have colder water in the hot part of the day. Colder water = cooler body. If you come off the bike hydrated your body will sweat and cool yourself off much better. I may also carry a towel to wipe the sweat off. If its humid that warm sweat could have a tough time evaporating off.

  • Beware of drinking water that's TOO cold. In boot camp in August in San Antonio we weren't allowed to have cold water in our canteens because of potential problems with the body going into shock. We all thought it was bunk until during the honor graduate run one of the guys decided to cheat and get water from one of the water fountains at the training center instead of in the barracks and about mile 2 he was swerving like he'd had a bottle of whiskey.

I'm sure the water will warm up quickly, but be careful of water that's TOO cold.

    I'm all about room-temp water.

Ya, we all know how fast the water seems to warm up in those little plastic bottles. Especially when it sits in that bottle all morning. Ice water can cause a shock to a warm system but cool water (under room temperature) is absorbed by the body faster, definately something that will help you out when you need it.

It goes without saying but everyone needs to think about heat proofing.  A few ideas:

    • Take a bandanna, fill it with ice and tie it around your neck.  Very effective.
    • Take sponges and put them under your hat.
    • Hat not a visor

Anyone have favorite heat beating techniques?

AC set to 74*F, ice cold lemmon aid, coke, tea, coffee, beer, and/or magritta, and stay in the house!

So the run is now three loops vs. two. With over 1,000 entrants the run could be very crowded at some point, especially for those who will finish in the middle of the pack.

Can you imagine a 4.36 mile loop with over 500 runners on it?

SWEEEEEET, one more excuse for the pathetic run time!!!

"Well, see, I was going for 1:30, but there were all these slow runners on the course so I ended up with a 2:50, but man I was feeling good too, its a shame."

Hey what's the story on the BT get-together carbo-load dinner? We can do either Friday or Saturday night, just want a heads up so we can let the relatives that we're staying with know.

Well Tony dropped the ball on planning this.
Personally I would rather not be around you nervous nelly's the night before! No offense to anyone, but I'd kind of rather do my own thing and relax. Plus not everyone likes to gorge on Mexican food the night before a race like Tom and I do.

I would be up for setting a time to meet at the Expo or bike drop off - we all have to be there at some point anyway... whatcha guys think?

I'm not scared of the heat. All I will say is HTFU! It's a race and treat is as that! I will go till my body gives up or they are throwing dirt on me!

    Dude.

I won't be arriving 'til about noon on Saturday. So I'm sure you all will be partying hardy by then, yes? I'd like to meet some peeps at the bike check-in though. Anytime after about 2 would work for me.

Well, if you are bald (like me), a hat is better than visor!

No Way, you could have an awesone visor tan

I'll have my hair pretty short. The head has been burned through the hair before so I might be smearing some sunscreen in there before I run.

It was reported the same a week ago. And that has to be no more then an inch in, that water was not 77 a week ago.

How deep is the official water temp taken?

4.6 Measuring Water Temperature. It is recommended, but not required that the water temperature for a race be

finally determined by a measurement made within 2 hours of the race start. Measurements should be made in at least

three locations on the swim course, spaced so as to divide the entire swim course into approximately equidistant

segments, and measured at a depth of 18 inches below the surface of the water, at points where direct sunlight can

strike the water. The water temperature for the race should be determined by averaging the three temperature

measurements taken. A water temperature measurement should also be taken prior to any pre-race meetings in order

to forecast to the athletes as early as possible the likely water temperature on race day and the likelihood of whether

wet suits will be allowed on race day

4.4 Wet suits. Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event

sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water

temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet

suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range

shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal

to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT

    Athletes Advisory Council.

Surface temp at the lake i swim at yesterday was 75F on the surface but 70 at 2ft

Not a math major so not sure if it's a linear or exponential increase as you near the surface.

Water Temp at Clinton lake 75* today, forecast is for 82* and isolated t-storms (hopefully in the afternoon) with winds at 8mph out of the south. Dosen't look like there will be many days warm enough to raise the temp before race day especially with soome rain still in the forecast.

With 150 people, drafting will be effort less for the first 500 yrds. Wish I could say the same about not getting kicked in the face.
