I am new, new, new to this whole tri thing. I'm a 45 year old husband and father of three, convincing myself that I can participate in a local sprint tri in nearby Cumberland County. The event will be held in August and I'm now in the process of training. I assume a 9 month head start will help.

I do have a sort of close friend who participated in last year's sprint tri. Of course, she came in second of all women participants and got a medal. I guess this put the thought in my head of myself doing a tri.

I have submitted an article about myself to BT and hopefully it will get a favorable review and will be showing up soon as a new article on this site.

Welcome and good luck!  Tell me about this race.  My in laws live in Dillsburg and DH would probably go for a travel race to his home town sometime in the future.  With my luck his sister would be running the rescue squad but I never need their help anyway

Thanks zipp1 and daspanglers. I think I will need lots of luck. Swimming is not my forte, but my plan is to use the kind assistance of friend who is willing to work with me in the water. Again, I'm hoping that the article I submitted about myself didn't get lost in cyberspace. I think I forgot to check that I would like it to show up in the beginners section.

From what I see, swimming is not the forte of MOST of us on BT.  I've been working with a coach through my gym for the past year.  He took me from just above doggie paddle to a stroke in the first 9 months, now we're working on new little details to cut down the stroke count and make it more efficient.  It's a lot of work, swiming takes a lot more thought to me than running or riding.  Big thing on the bike is learnng to gear properly and getting the rear end used to the seat of the bike.  Running as it's challenges but you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep going...That being said, work with your friend, then when s/he can't get your stroke any further get a real coached class at the Y or other gym to get the details down.

That's a pool swim in a no lane line pool?  Sounds like a cross between pool/open water.  Get some OWS practice too cause those swims are crazy!  Have fun!
