10,000 meters swimming
150 kilometers walking (hopefully a little running in there too)
40 kilometers on the bike at the health club. Doubt I will get out on the road in January.

I'm even slacking get my goals drawn up. Since December was a soft month I'm going to shoot for some pretty high goals (for me at least) in January

Swim 3 times a week (800-1000 yards)                           10500 yards in January

Run 3 times a week (2 tread max/1 outside) 10-12 miles 45 miles in January

Bike Trainer: 2-3 session a week (20-35mins)                  3-4 hours in January

How's everyone doing?
It's the middle of January and feels like spring here in Michigan.
And yes, I have lived here long enough to know that it will not last.
How is the base building going? I know for me the winter months are hard to stay focused.

It's been difficult stringing 5-6 days of workouts in each week, I had probably my best trainer ride at 9:30 last night and this was because I slept through my 4:30am workout alarm.

Was able to get in some outside runs with the few days of warm weather which gave me a little confidence boost as the treadmill was killing my run.

I'm finding in all of my workouts my HR is almost always in Zone 4-5, I'm new to the whole HRM thing, but in readign a few psoting it woudl appear I shoudl be be training a in a lower zone to build a better base, ANY INSIGHT HERE? I will add most of the workouts have been short and so I go balls out on them.

I'm going to shoot for a slower 6 mile training run this weekend and see if I can operate in a lower zone.

I just got a Garmin 50 for Christmas(with the pod and cadence sensors), and don't have a heart rate monitor to go with it yet. Frown That is on my "gotta have" list.

At this point, I go by "feel", and would agree on adding time to your workouts by lowering the level.  That being said, when it comes to running, try to stay in the ballpark of the 10% rule. To much to quick can bring on injury.

I hear you on the 10% rule, I've experinced the too much too fast results before. I skipped my Friday run in favor of doing a longer weeknd run , which will still have me within my typically weekly range in terms of miles.

It's been a while since I posted here -- sorry about the silence.

Last week was pretty good for me as far as training goes -- I'm starting to get back my running legs, and I've talked myself into getting back into the 5k/10k world in the spring.

The last few days weren't that great though; work took me away from my training plans, and some stomach issues lately have completely derailed my runs.  I've been feeling better today, so I'm going to try to get in a short run tomorrow or maybe an easy bike ride.

I am pretty much on track with my plans. Swimming is slowly improving - still technique focused. My knees are behaving and I am thinking to start spending some time on an elliptical trainer as an interim step towards running.

Wee! I am back in the running saddle. Too bad my biking isn't as consistent.

I literally started back into training this past Saturday with a slow 2 miles.

I got a Polar RS200 HRM for Christmas (and already had a Garmin 205) so now I am all techied up and ready to train my body right.

LESSONS LEARNED OUT ON THE RUN:
My HR is WAY too high - sometimes approaching 179 max. SO not good. I am elarning taht I need to forget the pace and work on endurance and comfort in the run. This translates into some seriously S-L-O-W miles, but hey in all do time it will work itsway out, right?

I did the following miles:
1/12 - 2
1/14 - 1
1/15 - 2

And just updated my training log for these workouts. Tonight will be 30 minutes of swimming drills at my local pool, and 1.5 hours of swimming with my tri club this weekend. I am planning on two more runs this week - to wrap up an additional 4 miles.

My GOALS are as follows:
SWIM: 3.5 miles
RUN: 30 miles

I am not doing a biking goal this month as I need to focus on my strength (running) and my weakness (swim). PLUS, my bike was stolen and I have yet to replace it so technically, I cannot train on it lol.

Have fun out there - enjoy the weather, I LOVE running in the snow!!!!!

Last night I did a nice 17 minute swim just to get back into the swing of things. I am going to run 1 mile, do some ab work, and then swim again for 12 minutes per my plan tonight after work.

I really like focusing on time and volume versus mileage and pace at this time. ) Thank goodness for BT for having some great programs for all levels here!

Today at lunch (in a few minutes) I will be going for a nice little 30 minute walk. Leisurely, but activity none the less!

Jen, I'm going to have to agree with your run philosophy; one of my old coaches used to always say, "To become fast, you need to go slow."

I was looking at some of New York Road Runner's races for 2008.  This past year I was planning on doing a 4-mile September race, but I had to drop it because of a shin split issue.  I think this year will be my chance for a rematch!  No definite date for the race yet, but I'll post it when I find out.

That is a great quote! And I agree - once I find that I am slowing down, after a while speeding up slowly is not so taxing. I am taking the same advice to my swimming - cycling is a whole other story. I have a 40 minute bike on tap for tonight. WEEE!

Yeah I nixed the bike and instead bought groceries.  Tomorrow is a long swim (1.5 hours) so I think that I will have made up for it. )  Just a lil.

Well I mamanged 1200 yards yesterday.  I am changing my focus and spending a LOT of time in the pool from here on out.  I switched training programs from 20 weeks to a sprint balanced 2x, to a 2x swim focused 20 week plan.  

 

So how is everyone doing???

My swim has been getting a little stronger.  Lately I've been noticing that my legs haven't been as strong for my runs and bike rides as I would like, so the other day I decided to do a toning class at my club.  Man did it kick my butt!  I'm really sore from it now, but it's a good kind of sore, and I left the class with some new strengthening moves that I'm definitely going to incorporate into my workouts to shake this jello feeling.

I'm focused on swimming technique and feel like I'm making slow progress. I'm also spending some time on weights (basic stuff that I can do 15-20 reps with) and some exercises to strengthen the muscles around my knees. I'm walking about every day and longing to get back to running....but, I'm being patient. My legs do feel a lot more stable these days and the last couple times I thought I had a knee problem, it turned out to be muscle soreness that did not interfere with walking/swimming and it went away a day or two later.

Finally got back in the pool today , my sons swim lesson doesn't count. Had a busy weekend  that derailed my training, it was so cold my morning run got scratched on Saturday and then I had to prepare for my wifes birthday. Slept in Sunday as my parents had our son for the night. Monday -just didn't feel like getting up. Today I was ready and hit the pool right at 5:00. Did a continous 500 and then 3 X100's. I will more than likely hit the trainer tonight to catch up a bit . Leaving on Friday for a short (returning at midnight on Sunday) weekend trip to Breckenridge, CO.

All right everyone,
Only 2 days left in the month, how are you all doing on January goals? I'm actually getting in some outdoor runs, so I'm excited about that.
Anyone have any races coming up in the near future? Indoor perhaps. (see my logs) If anyone is near enough the battle creek area to join us .....
Onward, February goals? Let's keep up the base building so we are ready when the weather breaks.
FWIW I'll have mine up by the end of the month.

Hey everyone,

 I am just getting back to running.  I got orthodics, took a rest and felt great today.  The only problems that I had was a blister.  The orthotics make it so my heal rubs.  Oh Well, nothing a BandAid and some Vaseline won't cure. 

I am off on my Jan goals due to the injury.  I hope Feb Goes better.  My goal is not to miss a training seesion all month.

Had some good days, had some bad  and then not enough training days in January. Throw in a vacation and bad weather and my goals didn't get met. I'm pleased with the bike trainer work for this month then the run and lastly the swim.

My original goal setting  

Swim 3 times a week (800-1000 yards)                           10500 yards in January
Run 3 times a week (2 tread max/1 outside) 10-12 miles 45 miles in January

Bike Trainer: 2-3 session a week (20-35mins)                  3-4 hours in January

Actual as of today, didn't log downhill skiiing or all of the shoveling.

Bike:

3h 29m 30s  - 58.86 Mi (GOAL MET)

Run:
1h 52m 25s  - 13.73 Mi (not so good)
Swim:
1h 37m 47s  - 4050 Yd (better than run , but not great)
Walking:
51m 30s

I'm quite satisfied with my January results to plan. I did decide to spend some of the time I was going to bike on the elliptical trainer:

swim: 14,000 meters versus plan of 10,000 meters (new PB)
walk: 145 km versus plan of 150 km
bike: 23 km versus plan of 40 km

elliptical: 4 sessions which were not in my plan

I sent the previous response early this morning and did some thinking while I was out for my morning walk. As a result, I ended up doing 17 km on the bike today and if I add up the distances I did on the elliptical trainer, I ended up meeting my bike goal of 40 km and my walking goal of 150 km.
